What to do?
It's really frustrating when you have one of each!
Mine are out all the time. Big field, (2 acres maybe) with shelter and stable.
Native pony, first time ever, is chubby. Horse, been poorly, lost weight and condition, now putting it all back.
Now, pony doesn't need much grass, whereas horse does.
I sectioned off a piggy paddock, and made it so that she has the stable access and horse had field and shelter (both are next to each other)
Pony looked mightily surprised when we left her :0
Went back later, to find the rope a bit saggy but both where they should be. However, horse was very tucked up and had been pacing along the roped off area, and wasn't happy. Pony was ok
Watched for a minute to see horse trying to push the rope down with his head, to free his girl.
Obviously he had been stressing even though just a bit of rope separated them. Idea was, keep her there during day and let her in the whole field at night.
When we opened the area, horse came in to be with his girl, pony galloped off for proper grass, horse then decided to jump the rope and join her.
This is getting long, sorry!
This isn't going to work, pony is fine but cannot have horse stressing, it's been hard getting weight back on him, so don't want him to lose it again!
Pony is exercised daily, in the field, 20 minutes to half hour just now, (field is up and down and good for building up)
Both are hacked 3 times a week or more.
I could try a muzzle
but I really hate them,a nd with the trouble I have had of late with people interfering with them in field, no doubt some kind person would remove it.
Gah! This is really tricky! Pony isn't fed hard stuff, couple of treats after work. Horse is on 2 feeds a day as he is still having supplements and needs it.
Sorry for the epic! Just hard trying to manage two different horses!
Will daily ridden work (not just plodding but trotting up and down hills, circles etc) be just as good for losing the weight or should I just get a muzzle and hope it stays on?
