hi, Does anyone have any experience with damaged hooves? Brought in my Welsh cob today and a chunk of hoof wall was hanging off, it’s about 2 inches by 2 inches. I think this has happened because he doesn’t have back shoes on, and has been getting separations between the white lines and hoof wall where small stones have got in (I thouight i was clearing this out, but obviously wasn’t doing it well enough :-( He doesn’t seem sore on it, and i cleaned it and put on an Old mac to keep out the dirt. I can see some white stuff around the egde (not pus, part of the hoof) and the hole is maybe a cm deep. My farrier says not to worry unless it starts weeping or bleeding. Anyone have any experience with dealing with this sort of thing? I’m really worried about dirt getting in and causing absess (only jsut sorted out infected hoof on his other leg when he stood on a nail!!!). anyone have any advice? Thank you!

I know of a gelding who had about a third of his hoof wall come away. he had to have a glue on shoe and it filled with putty until it grew out. which it did. his Farrier was fantastic and carried on when many would've given up. Id get your vet / farrier to have a look TBH.

My neighbours horse had hoof problems when they bought him and part of his hoof much like you describe was missing. The farrier simply filled it with putty the next time he was shod, just to tidy it up a bit. It didn't affect the horse at all - we were amazed at the simplicity of the idea.
Personally, If I was worried I would get someone to have a look at it, just to be sure and prevent infection, but if not just keep it protected to see how it goes.

can you clean it out thouroughly and pack it with tissue or animal lintex?

that's how i do it,keeps the mud out a treat and it's easy enough to do every day, without taking too much time up

Attys not shod and we think as he got up he managed to stand on one back hoof with the other one tearing a sizeable chuck out of it.

We cleaned it up and purple sprayed it as it had gone through the white line completly but no blood.

Farrier came out and tidied it up a bit and said to carry on as we were.

HE also agreed with our plan of not dressing it as the last thing you want to happen is for the hoof to get soft and soggy.

He was a bit sore on it and had a good 2 weeks totally of work then a couple of light sessions in walk on the 3rd week and since then we've been away all ok.

I'll go with the 'if its not sore its probably ok' and get your farrier to check next time he comes.

Blues back hooves are like this and when he is standing on concrete i can fit two fingers in the gap between his hoof and the concrete (on both back feet) but this doesn't seem to bother him at all. We are due the farrier (Sat with any luck) so he'll check him over but i suspect he will just trim them and leave them.

thanks for all ur help! had my farrier to see and he said kind of the same as last two posts - keep it clean but just leave it and shd be ok! Thank you for your help!!:-)
