Chunky - as a selling point?

Every now and again I am drawn to the dog ads, I just can't help myself :D

Lots of labradors described as chunky. *

What is the attraction of chunky?

Why not parents' hip and elbow scores and results of eye screening? Those to me would be selling points.

And the price for some of the potential walking vet bills is unbelievable.


*probably the equivalent of describing GSDs as big boned, also not an indicator of good health.

I'd guess they mean show labradors? But people might not even know what show means regarding dogs so they just say chunky instead. It's not a word I'd like to see when looking for a puppy that's for sure
 
At a guess I would suggest people might use it as a sales pitch for saying the pups are well fed/well reared/healthy. I don't tend to trawl the puppy ads because I try not to be a glutton for punishment lol, but in GSD puppy ads that sometimes pop up I see "big boned", "straight back", "oversized". These would all put me off.

But straight backed GSDs don't have hip problems dontcha know. Don't forget big paws, always a strong selling point ;)
 
There's a 'pet' GSD stud dog owner or two that boasts about how tall/heavy their dogs are and how many squillions of progeny have sired, and how big and heavy they are too, as if that's a good thing....it's just pure hype, the dogs themselves have done nothing except cover a load of bitches and if they're lucky, have a couple of good dogs behind them.
 
I would take it to mean square-built show-type Labs, rather than the scuttering little working-bred Labs that we have. I must admit that when we first met their dam I thought 'oh she is small'. They are lovely dogs and their main criterion was that they had to be available to take the Rottweiler's mind off her loss, which they did beautifully from the moment she set eyes on them. They have been very easy to train, on the whole but if show-bred had been available, we would probably have chosen them, as being easier than workers in a pet household.
 
I also think it means more of a show type labrador rather than the much more whippety working labrador. I have one of the former and my step daughter the latter and you would be hard pressed to think they were both labradors when you see them together.

You often see great dogs working on shoots and then they breed from two of them, wonderful workers both. But not a health result to be seen. It’s so annoying and why my last two have been pure trials bred. I like them whizzy anyway but for what a pup sells for just get hips, elbows and eyes done. I would gamble on other things.

Nothing to do with well fed pups, I think, and everything to do with meaning the heavier set/gamekepper/old fashioned type vs the modern trialling whippet in a spaniel coat type (I say this as the owner of both types!!)

Maybe. Every ad I see says chunky then shows normal puppies, not heavy set lumps! I suppose Bear would have been chunky as he’s a heavy set lad. Colleagues thought Mitch was skinny, I think he’s a normal puppy.

Yes had both hip and elbow scores for parents and going a few generations back, eye tests were clear as well. All health scores were good in my opinion and they had a few other health tests as well
