I took Louie to a dressage comp on wednesday and when we got back he had a swollen lump on the inside of his hind leg halfway between his hock and fetlock. It's a little hot but he's not lame. I've been cold hosing it but its not getting any smaller and doesn't make a difference is he's in or out. It's not got any bigger or smaller and he doesn't seem bothered if you put a lot of pressure on it.

On the other leg in the exact same spot is a very small splint (this came up a good few months ago) but it was never hot and he was never lame on it. He also has a few cuts and nicks down the inside of his hind legs. I don't like booting up in the field but is it worth it if he's doing this to himself?

Is this something worth bothering the vet about?

Sounds possibly like another splint (although unusual on the hinds). But of course it could just be a knock.

I'd keep doing what you're doing. But if he goes lame at all, then call the vet.

The first one came up as he got kicked in the field but I think he knocks himself when hooning around the field as well which doesn't help.

With the hard ground am I better keeping him in?

Agree with Amymay, and its sounds very similar to a splint an old mare of mine threw trying to bounce through a water complex many years ago. Never lame but I cold hosed three times a day for a week and kept turned out in a smallish paddock for three or four weeks then brought back into work, sound as a pound. any sign of lameness, though, vet!

So gutted, guess any chance of him having a showing career is down the drain!

Will keep any eye on it though and carry on what I'm doing. Also think I'm going to find some nice light cool boots to turn him out in so he doesn't do it again.

Ah, well if he's aimed at the show ring - get your vet up pronto.

He's not really but as he's for sale we have to keep our options open. TBH I think he would be far too bored showing and be a bit cheeky.

The swelling has gone down loads and not swollen anymore but a very large boney lump is still there. I really hope that isn't the size of the splint because it is huge and you can easily see it just looking at him.

Is it hard? Is he young? It sounds lik ea splint. Cold therapy is your friend and tbh 6 weeks rest from work is a charm and I think dmso is the ointment of choice but haven't used it personally. As he already has a splint it's unlikely he'll be bought for showing anyway-the rest is important as splints come up when the leg has been under a bit of strain so rest stops him going lame and becoming a niggly problem

Really good news, had vet out and both aren't splints :) the swollen one is just a bit of an infection from the little cut so now we have the pus out its a 100 times better. The other splint was just really hard scabs. Both gone now but still booting up his hind legs to prevent further issues. :)
