Citronella essence added to wash water buckets

Does popping some drops of citronella concentrate into my water bucket when I wash off my horses seem like a good idea, or is there anything to worry about with citronella? I believe the EU banned it for use in equine fly sprays, because some horses were allergic to it - but I don't think my two are

In this hot weather, they're needing daily rinse downs (or twice daily in the case of fat boy whose being worked twice a day), and atm I feel as though I'm just constantly washing off the fly spray that I'm applying - I use coopers, which is suppose to be affective for a couple of days (though not when you wash it off )

They'll have fly sheets on when the horseflies make an appearance, but until then, I'd like to allow them some naked time.

I do, and some tea tree too. I also bought some citronella fly spray the other day Does that mean that it doesn't actally have citronella in?

I used to make spray with citronella tea and vinegar and never had any problems - I think a few drops is a good idea as long as your horses don't react.

Is yours labelled as fly spray? I think NAF sell it, but call it coat spray now instead of calling it fly spray, to get round the bonkers EU regs.

Naf sell a citronella wash that you don't need to rinse, I use it after riding.

I prefer a lavender wash, and also spray with Barrier stuff when midges are around.

I use the barrier horse mint wash and just got the lavender one also.

Spray him with barrier fly spray as only one that seems to work on the boy xx

I put Detol in my wash off but might try the citronella wash off.

I think you will find that Citronella and Lavender are a banned substance under Fei rules.

If you are competing be careful about using them.

I don't see any problem with putting some citronella in water to wash down with. I make up my own fly spray with citronella in it, like many owners, without having any problems. I'm sure the EU do some stirling work but they seem to be remembered by all the silly legislation that they seem to pass i.e. banning citronella in fly spray due to a minority of horses having an allergic reaction. My daughter has [problems with Gluten.......... but we don't want bread, cakes, biscuits etc banned as a result.

I normally wash down with a litle antiseptic in the water, it's cheaper than citronella.

Citronella & Lavender do not appear on the FEI prohibited substances list. However there may be some chemical in them, that we may not be aware of, that does appear on the list.
