Just cut my poor dogs claw too short. Was just about to cut it and he moved and I cut it way too short and it has reallt started to bleed. Have bandaged him up and he seems ok to walk on it just wondered if I should take him to the vets.
Just had a little look and it had initially stopped bleeding till Benji started licking it then it started pouring again.

I feel so bad

i've done this once (to guineapig) felt terrible!
it stopped bleeding quickly so didn't go to the vet, just monitored for signs of infection and kept very clean.
dog may be different as they like to get into lots of germ infested areas, if still bleeding vet may put special glue on it, if not too deep and stopped I'd be tempted to keep v clean disinfect daily and monitor

Place his paw in a bowl of flour and this will stop the bleeding.....its a very good co-agulant, then just keep an eye on it, if he keeps trying to lick it stick a sock on his foot to stop him getting to it

Never heard of the flour trick, what a brilliant idea! You could have saved me so many trips to vets with torn claws.

All the vet would do is clean and give antibiotics, which aren't necessary unless there's an infection, so I wouldn't go to the expense. Once it's stopped bleeding I'd just bathe it in salt water twice a day and keep it covered with a sock until it's really dried up.

What can I say

I had agrooming parlour and had the actual costic sticks to burn them dry but I burnt a whole in my own eye one day

and decided flour was the better option..........it stops the blood really quick, and it just dries and falls off a day or so.

I think alot of people panic and rush to vet cos when you cut to the quick(BLOOD SUPPLY PART OF THE NAIL) it looks like a life threatning amount of blood loss, but it soon stops esp with the flour

our vet did this to our cat AND our guinea pig!!

keep it wrapped up and clean and it should heal in time.

Have raided the horse first aid kit and wrapped in some cotton wool and vet wrap. He hasn't chewed it and has been for a walk and it stayed in place!! Will prob leave on till tomorrow morning then take it off and check all is well. Luckily I managed to stop him putting his paw on the floor till I had dressed it so hopefully it won't get infected. Thanks for all the advice.
