Alfies dew claws are getting long now, so much so that i think they are beginning to hurt him as when i dry his paws he whimpers :(

Ive never trimmed claws before so was thinking of taking him to the vet first to see how its done. Any ideas on cost???

How do i know whether his other claws need trimming? they look ok and i can hear them when he walks but when i look they dont look overly long ( as in not much white bit left? )

Is it possible to get dew claws removed on an older dog and what does that entail??

And lastly what use are dew claws anyway!!????

I would get them clipped a a groomers.

We paid about £5 in England.

Yes you can get them removed as adults but its not a small surgery and has a pretty long recovery time. We had them removed from one dog because he continually tore them.

I would just suggest regular trimmings they can get them down pretty short after a while.

They are used for balance and grip i often see my dog using his at the park when he is tearing all over the place.

My vet and grooming parlour charge £5 for nail cutting (I think) but if you go to the vets for jabs/check up and ask if the vet could have a quick look/trip nails then it's usually free.

I'm not the best when it comes to deciding when to trim their nails. I was sure that Izzys' were desperate for a trim (very long) but vet only trimmed 4 of them. Thankfully Jake trims his own nails (he'll happily have a quick nibble every few days :) ).

Not sure about the dew claws...

Dense question, which ones are the dew claws? Are they the ones slightly up the leg on the inside? Chlo still has hers should she have had them removed?!?!?

I take Chloe to the vets to have hers done, always. Otherwise she wriggles and I can't hold her!

Yep those are the ones.
No she doesn't need them removed at all. The only time i would ever consider removing them is if they were constantly tearing them and splitting them.

I would recommend getting the vet to trim them. At our vets its free if the dog is being boostered or done during a nurse health check ;)

If they really are a problem, they can be removed as my staffie has had both hers removed at different times in her adult life :(

For one claw about 4 years ago it was just over £300 for the op plus bandage changes every few days, plus the antibiotics! It is simple enough but not sure about having both front feet bandaged at the same time

Also I wouldn't recommend it if it is not necessary - ie not causing him any problems

I think ill just get them trimmed! I didnt realise it was such a big proceedure!

If you get in with a good groomer than can trim them regularly and get them to the point where they are very short.

My boy has his and they were trimmed once a month for about 10 months and now they are really short and only need to be trimmed once every 3 months for so.

Dew claws can be a bloody nuisance. All mine have them removed as pups, most decent breeders will remove them them as a matter of course. If they are not causing a problem to the dog, then cut them, either at the vets - will charge a fortune for a few minutes work or a dog groomer if available, or yourself. Just mind the 'quick' - the pink bit, they bleed like hell if you nick them. I had a whippet whose dews were removed, wasn't a big deal. a couple of stiches & no problems.

If i trim the dew claws myself what kind of clipper do i need and where can i get them??

I prefer the scissor action clipper. I find the guillotine action clippers more difficult to use. Both styles are available in all good pet shops!:)

Hiya Im a groomer and we do the dogs nails as part of a full groom or £5 for just an allround nail trim it only takes a few minutes. If you do it yourself be calm and snip quick just below the pink line easy to see on a white nail and if you do trim too much dont panic Ideally use a stypic stick (men use it for shaving cuts) and this will stop the bleeding but I would recommend taking your dog to a professional to show you the first time
