My Bucas Power Turnout rug is now on its third winter and really desperately needs a good clean. It doesn't look too bad but it is incredibly heavy!

I've been reluctant to have it cleaned by my local tack shop rug cleaning service as they don't use the Bucas wash but how critical is this? I'm only wary because Bucas are the only rugs I know that cover such a wide temperature range and can be put on a wet horse and I don't want to compromise this.

What do you do with yours? Should I ask them to wash it in plain water, just cleaner or have it cleaned and reproofed?

Thanks in advance.

My old horse had a Bucas Smartex and I just got it cleaned along with my other rugs, they used the same products and I never even thought anything of it tbh!

I've always sent my Bucas rugs, including the Bucas Power and Smartex, to the saddlery to be washed and reproofed along with all my other rugs. The winter rugs get done twice a year, the summer/stables get done more frequently and still come up like new. The saddlery does do an excellent service though.

I have the Bucas rug wash stuff but I only use it for my Bucas sunshower and waterproof fly sheets. My heavier Bucas rugs all go away for washing and proofing - never had any problems
