As above so any tips for cleaning my boys bits :o When every I wash him down I hose his sheath but as to yet have not washed his member :o:o:o Its a job that I know needs doing but its never out when I wash him down lol.
I don't want the RSPCA out accusing me of molesting my Armas lol but I understand how important hygiene is.

I have 6 geldings and only 2 need regular cleaning, as they are all different, some produce more grease than others, if he will let you get a thin rag and gently put your hand up, and feel for loose bits and grease, my horses love it {mmmmm} and let me go far up, once the grease it wiped out, get another wet rag and wipe around with that, { i always do this job WELL OUT OF SITE :p} the only way they will drop their sheath is when im grooming them {cos they enjoy it} so i will very quickly rub off the hard bits.

Eeeek

Quickly rub off the hard bits.

Oooeeer

Mine does not object to me cleaning his sheath but I have never fished around with a rag  As a guy that sends a shiver down my spine.
Will give it a go !

I didnt know you were a man.
I sound like i enjoy it as much as my horses, { i dont honestly ;)}

I've had a few geldings and never had to go anywhere near their sheath... the more you interfere the more needs doing in my experience! The occasional squirt of baby oil did the trick, and my last boy wouldnt let me near that area even if id wanted to!

I have never really cleaned my geldings sheath. He keeps it very clean and i only interfere if see anything on it.
Once asked vet to do it under sedation as he hates having it done and vet said to leave well alone unless there a problem.

OP - don't clean his penis! I'm staggered he'll let you turn a cold hose onto his sheath! Would you happily let anyone do that to you??? The thing about washing his penis is that however gentle you are and however carefully you rinse, you will ALWAYS change the delicate balance of good bacteria and you risk starting a problem that was never there before. If you read the tins/jars of assorted sheath cleaner that you can buy the fine print always warns you to rinse, rinse and rinse again and of course never apply if etc etc etc. The only time the inside of your geldings sheath and his penis needs cleaning is if there's a veterinary reason to do so. Otherwise, leave it strictly alone!

And with many geldings - and some stallions too - if you fail to attend to hygiene of the sheath and penis you WILL have a veterinary reason!! Like, for example, maggots in the sheath - my vet sees a couple of these every year - they present as a colic attack because maggots chewing on your personal bits must be pretty painful! Or a large 'bean' stuck in the end of the urethra that prevents a horse urinating, or an infection that causes the sheath to blow up like a football - but a very hard and hot one - and immensely uncomfortable! Or hard lumps of segma on the penis and inside the sheath - this makes it uncomfortable for the horse to let down to wee and can actually lead to scratches and cuts on the sensitive skin of the penis - leading to infection. I could go on! But I've delivered a foal, cleansed the mare and will now get some sleep! If I CAN sleep after getting very irate at such stupid advice!!

I was told this, but advice has changed over the years and it's now recommended to clean but do not over wash as this is can cause dry skin and be very painful.

My 2 geldings that i clean get very greasy especialy in the summer where it will drip down their back legs, attracting flys, i asked a vet about it, he said some have no problems, others need cleaning { like mine}, nothing to worry about.

Sorry can't agree with that as per JanetGeorge. How would you feel if your OH did not clean his bits and left it caked in smeg not nice and just asking for an infection.

I agree entirely with this. Leave his penis alone!

Mine will let it all hang out if I scratch his belly in the right place  so I can pick of the flaky skin bits and gently rub off the grease - he doesn't get too bad though. I do have to go searching for the bean fairly regularly though which he isn't too keen about :o

The last time he had a full clean was last year when he had a fluid build up after being put on box rest. It was very swollen and hot and you could see the relief on his little face. B_O_F, most horses don't react in any way to a cold hose, so I hardly think it is a big deal.

Both the geldings I've had have been more than happy for me to have a good old look at their penis when it's out. I've never had to wash one, but as part of a washing down routine, if it's out it will get sluiced with cold water/warm water via sponge or hose. Both were happy for me to have a bit of a pick of dry skin as well (sorry if that's a bit too much info).

So whilst I agree with the only wash it if it needs it brigade, it's also very important to be able to get your hands on it whenever you want.

Agree with Janet. I have had geldings since the 1960s and never cleaned their bits, but about 3 years ago Murphy started getting sticky smegma all over his hind legs and we discovered his sheath was really gungey and horrible. We try and keep on top of it with washing and regularly checking, however last year we found him very distressed, kicking at his belly and trying to throw himself on the floor. He had maggots inside his sheath:eek: He was sedated and had a good clean out and now on vets advice during the fly season I regularly wash out his sheath with the hose pipe, he actually seems to quite enjoy it :o.

This last sentence made me laugh, I know it wasn't meant to, but it did!:D
