Cleaning his bits

Yes, ref mares I gently pick the crusty bits of from between her teats roughly once a month. If you keep on top of it it just needs some gently 'peeling' then once every 6 months ish I do a deep clean with sponge and warn water then sudocrem on afterwards. My mare is very used to it now as she knows I'm always gentle.
 
I did my geldings bits today. He frequently lets it all hang out especially when he is having a good brush. Removed 2 enormous beans - one of which had eroded a pocket inside so obviously can't have been very comfortable.
He loved it :rolleyes:
It's not something I would do often, but now and then I think it does need to be done. (If you see what I mean)

Note to self..beans on toast was a bad idea while reading this...and shall never be thought of quite the same ever again;-/

Op stunning PRE..clearly you have super photo shop/adobe editor skills for the lack of grass stains and brilliant whiter than whiteness!..or turn him out only on astro turf!

Olive oil /coconut oil(anti bacterial) is good for stopping any drying out and I use this on my mares after washing them..if you are able to keep mares/geldings clean with water & oil rather than chemicals which might irritate if they decide to retract before you've rinsed obsessively, you are less likely to have dry skin probs. My geldings again are very clean but they always have a good jet with the hose and happily let down for it too...so basically...they have a horse bidet & moisturiser after..you can get pocket sized sheath cleaning wet wipes too and I'm sure i saw some tea tree ones recently, helps keep the flies of their flies i guess!
 
My gelding gets a lot of smegma and it runs down his legs and gets shavings stuck up it so I have to clean it. He is not overly keen - a warm summer evening is best when he is chilled and he won't let it hang out for me to look at it - if he detects I'm even thinking about going near it back up it goes :D. I wonder if bedding such as shavings causes some horses to have more smegma to expel any bits of shavings that have got up there?

Because of this when he has his annual vaccinations he now also has a sedation for inspection to check there is nothing wrong and it has a proper clean before fly season :)

I had visions of you with a Vanish Oxy Action Spot Roll on and him being made to wear a pinny & overalls to go out!...now I have strange image of the 1990's Daz adverts with (Danny Baker?) and a horse answering the door, flicking his mane Timotei style!:D
 
SaharaS - eeeeww, that's very unfortunate that you were eating beans on toast whilst reading this thread... Lol!

JanetGeorge - I agree with you that not all geldings stay clean in there... Mine certainly needs a 'helping hand' every so often as the smegma always builds up over time and there's usually a 'bean' to be removed too...

Do stallions stay clean if they cover mares regularly? Maybe they're the exception to the rule?

IMO it's better to use only KYgel or a similar product to soften all the smegma before removing it from the sheath. This will prevent a soap from irritating the sensitive skin, and you could run the risk of not rinsing the soapy stuff away properly. (To use only a hose to try to rinse it clean, will do absolutely nothing other than the cold water running over the smegma. It won't loosen it.) I would also advice having plenty of disposable latex/vinyl/nitrile gloves ready - laid out within easy reach of where the cleaning is being done - so that you could donn the dirty gloves and use the clean ones as necessary.

I tried googling Daz advert & horse and this thread pops up on the first search page with those terms. So Daz is now linked with cleaning a horses bits. PMSL

His fly rug helps keep some of the crap of :) as I do like Armas to look good when I hack him out !

oops...in that case i must add a disclaimer..to anyone reading..please do NOT use Daz to clean your horses bits..tho equally nothing wrong with a human called Daz being made to do the deed!

npage123 - and it was one of those moments when you realise you've not had beans on toads for ever and suddenly needed to have them...VERY regrettably, esp as I'd just grated loads of parmesan on..*green face* for a second and quickly switched threads!

THe olive oil/coconut was my version of your suggestion..cheaper and less likely to have any risk of allergy to chemicals and far easier to explain your way out of should you be caught in the act of cleaning horse by a non horsey stranger, whilst brandishing a pot of ky or vaseline...whilst wearing dark glasses, flashers mac (like the old head lads wear as overalls in racing yards!)and having been spotted having coaxed a very wide eyed looking horse round a corner out of sight.
