I have an old pair of Mountain Horse long leather boots that I'm dusting off and re-wearing due to coming out of semi-retirement! I've been wiping them with a damp cloth, but this grotty weather has got them pretty dirty. The leather is so soft and the damp cloth isn't getting everything off. I do try and keep them away from mud, but the walk to the arena is pretty boggy! Can anyone recommend a good cleaner and then treatment/polish for this kind of delicate leather? Happy to take recommendations for horsey brands but wondering if something more generic might be just as good - and half the price!

MH advise not to use glycerine soaps as they are too harsh. But the damp cloth they do recommend isn't quite cutting it.

I bought some bareback boots and purchased their cleaning kit. It's great, has a foam cleaner, waterproof spray and luxury dubin. The boots are soo soft and this seems to clean and protect them. Water beads off them

I take the mud of with a sponge and cold water. Dry off with kitchen towel and clean with boot polish. Once you have two or three layers of boot polish, it will act as a repellent and mud will wipe off easily.
Thanks all. I think my problem seems to be not conditioning them properly before exposing them to dirt. Whoopsie, hopefully after a couple of cleans and then treatments they'll come good!

To get off ground in dirt use hot water with a bit of washing up liquid let them fully dry then condition them.

Wipe over, thoroughly dry.

Then use Kiwi parade gloss boot polish (having warmed it, I use a pair of tongs to hold tin over the gas hob), rub in well then brush hard. Repeat at least twice more, polish up briskly with non lint type cloth till you can see reflection.

This isnt the army way but putting a minimum of 3 coats on will help with protection. Wipe over immediately after use next time. I do my boots at the end of every weekend after cleaning tack. They get the 3 layer clean once a month unless they've got particularly disgusting, but at least 1 layer weekly.
