What do you use?

I am having problems at the moment. At our yard we all have a room at the back of our stables. The problem is somtimes when i rains hard water gets in making my back room damp (even though covered all the walls with proofer and paineted them in the summer). My bridle is getting mouldy really quickly and I am having to wipe it ever few days. Its also getting stiff. I cant take it home as my mate part loans my horse.

My saddle is fine though.

So I have bought a waterproof bridle bag which will hopefully solve the problem but I want something to try and resore it a little. Is an expensive bridle and only about 6 months old, and looked new until about 6 weeks ago when the rain started.
 
A good quality cream or balsam may help restore the leather - stubben hammanol / effax? Also that kaocholin (spelt wrong!!).
I personally don't think the plastic cover will solve it though - it will still be in a damp environment. If I were you I would be tempted to buy a cheap nylon jobbie and take your nice bridle home till it warms up. Alternatively can you put a heating source in the tack room?
 
I will have a look in the tack shop tomorrow, im sure I have seen the Jefferies stuff in there. I usually just use leather wipes made for furniture and they make it come up lovely, but dont seem to waterproof it very well.

Its not megga expensive, just not cheap. I keep my really nice competition bridle at home now. His saddle has a cover on it and that stays nice so I will give the bridle bag a go and see what happens. If I have no luck I can revert back to his old bridle which I now use for lunging, that was a very cheap one.
 
I think some leather just seems to grow mould more than others. I used to have a Jeffries saddle and that always grew mould whereas my Black Country and GFS didn't. I have a heater in a boarded out shed for my tack now - i just put it on in damp weather for a short time.
 
maybe a little wipe with milton,the baby sterilising stuff to kill the mold,then a good leather feed and saddle soap to waterproof it on top of that
 
I use Carr, Day and Martin Saddle Soap - comes in the cream tub. Melted down with a bit of Full Fat milk added (was told to do that) and its really good. Also makes the saddle seat less slippy for some reason - but I don't use it with water, just a sponge after I have wiped tack with a very diluted Fairy liquid solution.
