Cleaning the hobday wound

Brought Aston home from the hospital yesterday. As to be expected, there was some fluid draining from his open wound.
My question is how deep do you clean the wound?? The hospital said just to wipe around the egdes with warm water, but it was full of gunk and fluid this morning. Should I be washing it out fully as I did this morning, or leaving the inside part of the wound to go *ahem* 'crusty' - for want of a better word!!?

I'd give the horsepital a quick ring Claire. When my boy had his eye removed and came home I had to ring them a couple of times with queries about care of the wound and their after-sales care and interest was brilliant.
 
make a bud type thing with cotton wool and get in as far as is comfortable, use the vasaline dwn the jaw line and around the hole, the hole will need to drain!! hows he in himself?
 
Pinktiger, he is as bright as a button! He is eating absolutely everything put in front of him ( no change there, then!) and isn't coughing at all. I moved him from one stable to another to muck him out this morning and he was already delighted to be out of his box!
I may try leading him 'quietly' around the yard tonight but any 'airs above the ground' and he'll be straight back to jail!

Have been putting vaseline round the wound as suggested.
When cleaning the inside of the wound, should I be removing all signs of crusted blood/scabby bits etc?? My usual wound management involves scrubbing everything back to the pink with Hibiscrub, but this is an altogether more delicate wound, so any advice warmly welcomed

Don't be surprised that there is a lot of junk - it is normal. Stick your finger in there, give it a good clean, get all the crusty stuff off and in no time if will start healing nicely. Of course it is delicate, so do not be aggresive, just confidently clean!!

I would not use cotton anything - it is so sticky in there, you don't want to have fluff left in there. If you do not have 4x4s, use a sponge or cloth and just keep it clean (in boiling water, not washed with chemicals).

Any more questions please ask - I have been there and done that (with a trach too).

My fingers are itching at the thought of being able to get in there and give it a good clean!!

The only thing that has made me queasy so far was being shown a larynx at the vet hospital. The surgeon directed us into a room and said she'd be back in a minute. What we found in there was a horse head cut in half. We stood there staring at it, trying to look brave, then she reappeared with a larynx in a box, and quickly ushered away from the head that someone else had been working on....

thats brilliant news, hes sounds like hes coping very well and is going to be fine!! I used the hibiscrub and cotton wool as the vets recommended (cottonwool once wet is less fibrous) and exactly as your doing, but i also used the barrel of a syringe (hibiwater) to gently squirt over the scabs to ease them off,rather than scrub dont be afraid to get into that hole and around the edges!! it will be very gunky to start with but in about 10 days it starts to close over is amazing how it heals so well, my boy has a 5 pence piece of harder skin under his neck and absolutly no sign of the tie back scar!!! helps if they are good eaters with the antibs and bute too!! well done!!
