At the end of the garden, there is a 30m by 20m bit of land that is going to have some stables built on it. Currently though it is a proper dump - it has been used as a dumping ground for soil, rubble and general **** (nothing hazardous like asbestos, just old sofas and scrap metal). Before the builders start on it, I'd like to get it levelled or dug out. In parts it's very high (about 1.5m) and in parts very low so it might be possible to just move the earth and level it out.

We have 10 acres adjoining this bit of land so we can sacrifice a corner and just shift the earth if need be. But what would be the best and most cost effective thing to do?

Is it possible to just level it and compact it down, then let the builders put down their hardcore and concrete? Or does it need to be properly dug out?

Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost? Who would I ask for this sort of work?

If you have the time and energy, I'd suggest taking anything like the old sofa and metals etc to your local household waste recycling centre. Assuming they are your own bits n pieces, they should take them off your hands for free. Other option would be a hire a skip and rope in some labour, but skips can be expensive!
If you only leave the soils and bricks etc, then it might be best to speak to the builders who are doing your stables and see what they need to make up foundations etc before you move it around.
If you think its mostly soil, then levelling it around your stables site might be easiest option, if hardcore rubble type materials could either be used in stables construction or you may find a use for it in gateways etc to lessen winter mud.
