Cleaning wounds

Question - new horse owner asked me this and wondered if anyone has any ideas to offer:
I am a new horse owner so am new to cleaning wounds I find that I am often pushing tiny bits of dirt and debris further into a wound instead of actually cleaning dirt out of it - is there a special technique people use to clean wounds?

I always clean initially with water from a hose pipe as it often flushes out the bits of dirt etc.

If it is still looking a bit dirty but otherwise ok, then flushing with sterile solution along with using something like Flamazine usually works well.
