Cleaning your geldings 'bits'

I used to clean my geldings bits about once a year after a winter in. Used to get nasty bits attached from bedding and stained legs. Now he is older (bless) he is a lot grubbier. I give him a wipe out with KY Jelly or Boots similar which seems to do the trick.

Last week for the first time ever I found 'the bean' and it is bean shaped!!!!

Luckily my boy seems to enjoy having his bits cleaned tho' he doesn't drop and I have to 'go in'.
 
It seems that they are all different! Accepted practice at our yard is 'leave well alone' and only if there is a problem should you be 'messing about'. I haven't done anything to H's 'bits' in the nearly 2 years I've had him. Only once or twice picked off any crusty bits (which wasn't much) when he was letting it all hang loose! It smells fresh as a daisy - think if it smells horrid, that is a warning sign.

I do keep an eye open for any changes, though.
 
I am a bloke and have no qualms about cleaning my geldings bits, rubber glove baby oil and up to my elbow, when I first had him he got an infection through me listening to the " I never bother brigade" I felt very guilty as my gut instinct was to do it, cost me a vet bill and vet said I still had to do it even after his antibiotics, I don't see what the big deal is about doing it, it ain't difficult, if it's dirty clean it, if it's not don't, simples.
 
Unless it looks infected, swollen or sore they are best left alone. In the wild they manage.

The most I ever do to clean a gelding's sheath, is to squirt a bit of baby oil on it when he's 'relaxed'. I did this when I first got my horse in July and it was very crusty, and the oil loosened it up and has kept it clean since!
 
my vet thinks they should be cleaned every month.dunno about that but one horse i left alone cos he wasnt dirty had a bean tear through the front of his penis half way up the shaft -it was the size of the palm of my hand:eek::eek::eek: . so now i clean them regularly and get those beans out!
 
Ok am confused is the bean in the penis or in the sheath? My geldings 'bits' look clean when it all hangs out but should i clean it anyway if the bean is inside or am i just being dumb?

I've never heard of a gelding in the wild......

The bean is in a pocket just inside the urethra, so you can't tell if he has one by just looking.

The bean is found on the tip of the penis. There is a sort of channel that circles round the urethra - the little hole the wee actually comes out of. It is in this channel that the bean can be found in a sort of pocket. It can seem like the bean is small until you squeeze it out and it can be really quite large, as in broad bean large! Be very delicate when doing this!!!

Occasionally I'll attack it with an impromptu jet of baby oil, and then leave him to it.

I think really it's a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. If he has any problems passing urine or his urine is 'odd', I'd get it checked out. Otherwise I leave it well alone, par the odd oiling!
 
I clean on a regular basis but have never oiled his bits :eek::eek:
May have to give that a go, will have to make sure no one is watching ;)
 
I use baby oil, liberally applied and later the same day I can remove any pieces. Altho I dont remove a bean, urination is normal and the baby oil softens everything up so hopefully that is ok too. Embarrassing going into the chemist and only buying a large bottle of baby oil tho - maybe go to supermarket next time....:-)

However I will have a more detailed look re bean when horses are sedated for their teeth being done later in the autumn (also vet will be there then to 'guide' me)
 
I clean mines fairly regularly. He is a dirty boy. Often doesn't drop to pee. Vet says nothing wrong with him. I use ky jelly.

Vet once advised me to use pile cream on a lump he had on his side. Was an embarrassing day at Tesco buying big tube of ky jelly and big tube of pile cream :0

Tried to get the OH to get it, but he refused :)
 
I had never cleaned my boy's bits til I moved him to the farm where I am now. I had been told by the lady who ran my old yard, a professional producer, instructor and dressage rider, to leave well alone.
The older lady I keep my horse with now was horrified I never cleaned it and told me I was neglecting my horse! I find her weekly 'down there' on her gelding, who has since developed a massive lump on his sheath... vet doesn't know what it is, though I have suspicions it may be down to very overzealous cleaning... I think she has been secretly cleaning my horse's bits too... I am looking for a new yard!!!!!!

I try to keep a happy medium - if he pokes it out I clean it!
 
MY boy likes being cleaned down there, he will happily flop it out at any given moment. I haven't ventured into the sheath though, just sponged off his penis with water as it gets quite crusty.

I found the bean once too, quite large, I was fascinated in a grossed out kind of way, must remember to have a gentle rummage again as that was over a year ago!
