Cleaning your horses teeth

I have bought a nice toothbrush, made minty water and with a friend to scratch can just about do this on my old Irish horse, on dentist instructions.

Do they ever come to patiently accept it - or I am always going to need an accomplice to do this (twice a week!!!).

If he's had dental problems he might be protective of his mouth, so super patience is required.

Thanks - will try salty water. It’s just she gets food stuck in her teeth and it starts to rot. Maybe minty salty water!

My non horsey friends can’t believe I have to clean her teeth and she has her own brush

I’ve trained mine to tolerate me sticking a hose in their mouths so I can flush them out. We also syringe hexarinse in every now and then.

I use a drencher to wash and force any stuck food out of my horses mouth due to her having diastemas. This works well and she actually seems to enjoy it!

You don’t do drencher training by any chance
Seriously. A bit of me thinks she knows I am trying to help her so I have hope ….. when you say drench do you use a large syringe? And do you flavour the water?

Sorry to jump on thread but never heard of hexarinse and it sounds good! Can you use the dog one? Just thinking about trying it and not wanting to pay loads in case my boy doesn’t like it and the dog one is in a smaller tube.

Alternatively has anybody ever used a human mouth wash?

It's similar to this.

When first bought I placed in her mouth a few times whilst empty and let her get used to it being in her mouth, then slowly released water a few times - now she stands with me whilst I fill it waiting! Just slide it either side of her lips a few times until the water is running out clear, I usually do each side twice and just use water from her water bucket.

My boy got a nasty mouth ulcer pictured and I was told to use hibiscrub for my horses mouth ulcer (filling syringe and squirring it) and to clean the gaps between his teeth with the hibiscrub and a toothbrush

In the end I bough Chlorhexadine mouth wash instead (Corsodyl) as its minty flavoured whereas hibiscrub is still chlorhexadine but soap based. He used to be fine letting me pick the gaps out with his toothbrush. I used to do it daily and he'd always get a treat after, which helped.

My horse is really good with teeth cleaning. I just use tepid water and a brush or clean muslin cloth. He holds still for me use a tooth pick to clear out stuck food. However, he's always had an easy going nature.

I put some toothpaste on the toothbrush to do one of mine. He loves it.
