My mare, had a foal over 3 years ago (filly is 4 next spring), milk dried up fine no issue and she has been dry since and back in normal work.
Couple of weeks ago she started getting twitchy around her rear end, started during massage session which she is never over keen about so didn't think much about it and she ok for me to groom/handle her, I did have a good look after session and there no lumps or bumps and she was dry as had a squeeze.
Since then she has got progressively worse, tail swishing a lot and she started getting funny about legs straps on rugs, so swapped rugs to 1 with fillet string.
Yesterday she had saddle re-fitted and back checked and no pain there.
She had been turned out and haring round in field and got a very muddy belly, so gave her a clean of and she started kicking out when got near her teats/rear end, she is a touchy mare but she'll tolerate me handling her. After preserving for a bit, we twitched her and I gave her a good clean with warm water, they were a little bit dry so put some baby oil on them. She however from the moment I touched them was leaking clear (very slightly cloudy) liquid, after she was clean she seems slightly more comfortable but it wasn't a cure and she still tail swishing and holding it up at a funny angle.
Weight wise she is a little poor, she is stress head and stresses it off, she just doesn't look pregnant.
I do have an uncut donkey and they frequently go in adjacent paddocks so it not impossible that she isn't as he could have potentially got her through fence but I've had him 7 years and the only mare he has ever covered did the chasing!!
She has been a little moodier recently but she is a mare that wears her emotions on the outside. I also couldn't tell when she's in season or not as her behaviour is so changeable even on a hour to hour basis.
I am going to call vet at lunch today, but if she isn't pregnant any other ideas?

The fact you've breached the teat by drawing it means if she doesn't have it she likely will soon. It could be a false pregnancy or any number of things that's why you need the vet.

Spoken to vet, he is confident its not mastitis as no heat, swelling and discharge is not gunky. He wants he on 3 day danilon trial to see if her twitchiness improves and if it does we then presume pain and start investigations, if she continues to act twitchy we are going to presume hormones. She will be getting a scan to rule out pregnancy/ovary issues but vet wants to ensure whether pain 1st

flowing down her legs this morning didn't touch udders at all, although I did find a small (egg size) lump between her udders and inside of stifle region which could possibly explain the lashing out. She is still very twitchy and swishy with her tail.

My mare had these symptoms.. turned out to be mastitis with secondary cellulitis. After the infection went, had bloods done as she was still having clear fluid, turned out she has cushings - It can present like this in rare cases although regarding the infection, my vet said that they had seen a lot of mares this year with uterine infections.
