Hoping this will be hypothetical, but I may soon be faced with finding a new horse for starting off in eventing.
If I have to, I would be looking for a cleveland bay or X, but the one I had in the past developed Spavin in both hocks at 10 yrs and was retired. I have seen another ad for a similar horse in breeding and size of about the same age also with a spavin. Does anyone have experience of this kind of problem in the breed, and does anyone successfuly event a pure bred one?

i would love to find which breeds arent susceptable to spavins - my idxtb also spavins both hinds-0 thankfully have fused and we can do dressage (not grand prix or anythign lol - prelim level) and now she got navicular too - think its the heavier breeds who seem to slam feet down. my vet said heavier horses all tend to be prone to it - thinking of something lightweight next time perhaps!!!!!

I own a part bred and used to ride a pure bred for someone. The part bred does not event because he had an accident in the field as a youngster and is now mechanically lame behind (not hock related though). He does jump and XC though.

The pure bred was a hunt horse, he would jump anything, and would have probably evented at low level, but probably would have been too chunky to get the times at anything more than novice.

Neither has had spavins, but both were buckers.

My part bred is by Bantre Bere if that helps.

We have a part bred that events - no spavin problems. His full brother is eventing at intermediate level and presume no problems with spavins with him either as he hasnt had time off eventing.

Ours bucks as well but only when he's excited and keen to go.

All very encouraging. I know the police mounted section down our way are off them at the moment as they can be very willful - hence reports of bucking I guess. But what's a few bucks between friends? I'm sure there is no better looking horse than my retired CBX so I will definately be looking for his double that works!

I think they can be willful, though sensitive - one of the things I love about their characters though! My other halfs cbx does have a bog spavin, though it's from a knock when a baby, not something that work has brought about. She still is very sucessful at 1.05m bsja and works at medium level in dressage at home - though it bores her so no competing at that!
No better breed in my opinion, enjoy your hunt!

Had a pure bred CB mare, disastrous hocks, spavins. Pathological weaver, dripped buckets of white foamy sweat when being ridden, when in the stable and also had nervous diarrohea like water. She would weave in the field over a gate, weave without anything to weave over. The sweetest mare but very special needs. We relaxed her enough to go to a wonderful home who understood her pyschology. She was extremely well bred but we could not breed from a mare like her.

She was also a bucker of the rodeo variety. This post is my experience with one CB not a generalisation.

My choice would be a hardy 3/4 bred or 7/8 with a touch of pony or ID
