I have been offered a CB mare for free, I dont want to look a gift horse in the mouth but as I allready have a mare and a youngster I dont want to take her on if she is going to be too high mainenance. So I want to know what sort of temprament I can expect from her ie flighty tb like or sane sensible native, .I am assuming they are good doers she is the size of a house atm.She seems very sweet from what I have seen
Thanks

blimey....well is she what you want? how come she's free?
CB's are greatt horses have wonderful tempraments, maybe a little quirky, honest, loyal and I would so have another if I could....what would you be doing with her? is she full CB?

Need to speak to stinker stonkers mum on the forum she has 2 and a half (foal due in June) and totally adores them - the mare is very steady, loves her food, and safe as houses. The gelding is a baby and can buck for England, but is as handsome as they get! And they are a very laid back breed but can have a stubborn streak. I would have one from what I have seen, excellent hunters !!

I dont really know if shes what I want as I wasnt actually looking for another one. My friend bought her last week as she had been looking for a show cob withoutany luck and got her on a whim. Now she has been offered her dream horse that she met at the royal london, as I am driving her 170 miles to pick it up she aid I can have the mare, Mellissa for free. Mellissa is full CB allpapered up, 11 years lod was a brood mare but has cbeen backed, 2 years ago, but done nothing since

I am here

I have five including a four year old 17.2hh stallion and all mine are lovely to handle. They are real people horses and love attention. Check she is a pure-bred CB and tell us about her. What is her pedigree name?

I am not surprised she is huge they are very good doers. They are horses which once upon a time would have worked in harness for hours each day or galloped all day in the hunting field. Great strength and stamina if this mare won't get lots of work then adjust her diet accordingly.

This is our smallest CB only 15.2hh in her party frock

Im not sure of her registered name but she is registered with the cleveland bay society, she was once owned by a cb breeder but unfotunatly I dont know much more about her. I will try to do a bit of research on her when I get her passport. I liked the look of her and she had a nice steady kind face , and didnt react to my foul tempered chesnut beast squeeling and stamping at her from the other side of the fence!

Your girl is very pretty and the same hieght as mellissa but not as round!

I love cb's.I have a cb xtb mare by Spartacus .I have owned her since she was four and she is now 20 years and still going strong. She has been my once in a life time horse and has been a great alrounder .(including taking me to HOYS )I agree that the cleveland can be stubborn at times and do not take fools gladly, but they are also loyal and a great ride. They have a deep history with this country and were in great demand as carriage horses and when crossed with a tb ,do make fab hunters as they have so much stamina and never tire. Many people turn their noses up at them probably because i don,t think they are just anybodies ride. But i love them and would have a good one over any warmblood any day of the week!It is so sad that this breed is now on the endangered list. The only downside to some of them is that they can be a little long in the back conformation wise, but generally good ones are stunning and have great shoulder ,and length of rein.
Can't resist showing you a pic of my little mare, she is only 15.2 hh...although her dad was 17.1 hh!!But she does ride BIG.

Don't look your gift horse in the mouth - a CB is a really versatile horse. As well as driving and jumping two CBHS members have mares who have competed in endurance to 80kms in very good times.

This is all good and now I cant wait to get her, cant do anything till the weekend but first thing saturday i will go get her.I will keep you all posted as to how we get on . Thanks to you all for your replys xx

I have a cleveland gelding and had a filly before him and they are a very even tempered breed, clever and like time to consider things but once they have trust in you, tend to do as you ask. they make fantastic alrounders but what I would say is if this mare isn't for you, try and find her a home with a reputable breeder as mares in particular are a real rarity and it would be a shame to let her slip into the hands of someone who doesn't fully appreciate this.

Another CB fan here. My CB is 12 years old and was broken in last year. With a firm but kind hand I now have a fab horse and a good friend We sadly lost my husbands CB to colic last year he was the best horse we ever had and we both miss his lovely head over the stable every morning. Good luck.

cant wait to see piccies of her, cant believe how lucky you are to be given a CB, oh if only that would happen to me....
I really wish you all the best with her and keep us updated.
They are such a fantastic breed of horse to have I miss my lad as he was a wonderful wonderful boy at only 15.1 but dad was a full up CB and almost his double except the white bits on his face and size...but the best horse I have ever ever had.

This sounds like Gwaithmari Sweet Melissa. If so was a broodmare at Cholderton stud, then sold a couple of years ago. Had a foal by Trifolio. Must be about 15 years by now. Used to living out, would be cheap to keep. But only recently backed so green. By Littleback Cavalier out of a Tregoyd mare.
If it is this mare and she was offered to me for free I would be there with the lorry straight away.

What a great web site.Tregoyd have some cracking quality CB'S.
Makes me want another one!It would seem that looking at the number of exported clevelands to America, australia and France that once again us Brits have forgotten what wonderful quality horses we can breed. We really should be looking to keep them going strong in Britain. They are on the rare breeds list in this country arn't they?

Ohh that is sad news rollin. How has this happened to such a versatile breed of horse.I know that many of our heavy breeds are under threat like the suffolk punch and i suppose the fact that the tractor has taken over in agricultue is the main reason for their demise. But the Cleveland makes a great riding horse and more people are riding for leisure nowadays ,so why is this breed dying out when so many of us praise them as such good horses. It dosn't make any sense. This is what i hate most about this country,we just don't know when we have a good thing until it is nearly gone.
