Cleveland bay x 3/4 Trotter **picture added**

This is the breed standard for the CB - make sure it is registered with the society so that you can enter Part- bred classes - do you know who the dam/sire are?

Re trotter - I know nought, although I would imagine it would give the CB side (important bit of the horse) a very nice gait!

Photos please too!!

CLEVELAND BAY STANDARD OF POINTS

The following Standard of Points have been suggested by the Cleveland Bay Council for the guidance of persons interested in the breed and Judges of the breed.

HEIGHT: 16.0 h.h. to 16.2 h.h. but height should not disqualify an otherwise good sort.

COLOUR: Cleveland Bays must be bay with black points, i.e. black legs, black mane and black tail. Grey hairs in mane and tail do not disqualify. These have been long recognised as a feature in certain strains of pure Cleveland blood. White, beyond a very small star, is outside Breed standards but as from January 2005 they can still be registered however Breed Committee comments are noted on the passport and in the Stud Book. Legs which are bay or red below the knees and hocks do not disqualify, but are faulty as to colour.

BODY: The body should be wide and deep. The back should not be too long, and should be strong with muscular loins.

The shoulders should be sloping, deep and muscular.

The quarters should be level, powerful, long and oval, the tail springing well from the quarters.

HEAD AND NECK: The head characteristic of the breed should be bold and not too small. It should be well carried on a long lean neck

EYES: Eyes should be large, well set and kindly in expression.

EARS: Tend to be large and fine.

THE LIMBS:

Arms and thighs and second thighs should be muscular.

The knees and hocks should be large and well closed.

There should be 9" upwards of good flat bone below the knee measured at the nearest point on a tight tape.

The pasterns should be strong, sloping and not too long.

The legs should be clear of superfluous hair and as clean and hard as possible.

THE FEET:

O One of the most important features of the breed; the feet must be of the best and blue in colour. Feet that

ar are shallow or narrow are undesirable.

"NO FOOT - NO HORSE".

ACTION: Action must be true, straight and free. High action is not characteristic of the breed.

The Cleveland which moves well and which is full of courage will move freely from the shoulder and will flex

his knees and hocks sufficiently. The action required is free all round, gets over the ground, and fits the

wear-and-tear qualities of the breed.

The bloke was very vague as hed been given mare in payment of work and it had foaled in 2006 he says it isnt registered as he doesnt know how to but mum is...??? it stands at 13.2hh now

I had a CB xAnglo-Arab that was fantastic! She looked like a mini warmblood at 15 hands, had an amazing temperament, a huge jump and was a pleasure to own. Her feet were such exceptionally good quality I never had to put shoes on her in 5 years of ownership and this was working her 5 times a week in cotswold stone country. I'm just about to start breaking her 3 year old daughter who is by Pro-Set so I'm expecting to have a little cracker there!

I havent come across cb x trotters but as the trotter it usually a light weight breed with extravagent paces you will find yourself with something probably middle weight build that can move! Just make sure that it naturally knows how to canter as some trotters find this pace difficult.

iv just been sent a picture of him hes bay typical CB looking with long legs and very bum high might be a good buy just the passport thing putting me off

No nicked it from the Cleveland Bay website

Remember it is only 2, CB's mature very slowly (like everything else they do) so it will have a lot more growing and filling out to do.

Good luck

PS What was the name of the mare then we can check the stud books.

Yes they do mature very slowly - he will probably be growing until he is 7.

I bought my CBxTB at 15hh when he was rising 5 and he is now 15.2hh ish and rising 7 so hopefully he has stopped growing (although he is looking suspiciously croup high lately). I know someone who had 2 CBs - one stopped at 15.3hh and the other at 17.2hh! It depends on what they are crossed with really, although hers were both full breeds. Mine looks like a typical CB with the colouring (except 2 white socks!) and the slightly bigger head and the donkey ears. I have seen CB crosses which are actually much lighter in coat and a lot more white markings. Mine is a bit smaller than the standard, although another friend of mine has a full CB that is only 15.2hh (and looks exactly like mine except for the 2 white socks!)

Temperament wise they are very brave and strong and there is a stubborn streak that you cant fight - you need to convince them to work with you. It took me a long time to come to an understanding with my boy, and for a long time everytime I rode it was a subtle power struggle between the two of us until someone gave in. But I expect that with stubborn youngsters in general - I just think CBs in particular are very intelligent so you need to factor that in as well.
