Hi! I wonder if anyone could tell me whether Cleveland Bays are just naturally good doers or prone to eat themselves silly?
I have one for schooling and he is just a master of putting fatty deposits on!
He's on grass mainly plus some chaff with supplements. He can be seen on here (don't want to paste pics on forum as he isn't mine):
This is Spt last year and he is slightly podgier now:

and when he was fitter several years ago:

I wonder whether it is just the characteristic of the breed (this generous fat coverage) or whether we can try to burn it...

His owner hacks him and I do some schooling with him once a fortnight so his workload is light. Any ideas of a feeding regime? He lives out. A muzzle?

I have a Cbx and yes she likes to eat lots!!! she is a little like a greedy 13hh pony when it comes to food so it could well be a bit of a breed trait. currently she is on box rest but she was only on quater scoop of fibre mix once a day and now on box rest is getting hay hifi light (so she gets quite a bit of this so she thinks she is full) and small amount of graz on. safe to say still quite round! is there any chance of him doing more work maybe a sharer? the mo work the better.

I think Cleveland Bays are naturally good doers so really the only way to keep weight down is to give him more work & restrict his feed intake. Basically he will need to go in a muzzle & be exercised more.

This is interesting, I think that Ralph is CB as he is almost identical and has taken a long time to grow up (previous ex with CB youngsters) he is an RSPCA rescue so difficult to know breeding.

But he too has weight issues, he is fed on air and has the same feed as some ponies; yet is still quite lardy. Unfourtunately at the moment he is only going out for an hour a day, as the grazing is so lush and only ridden twice a week ( I've just had surg).

I was surprised and quite worried yesterday to see how much he'd gained in a week of this grass.......so now on a more restricted diet

I have a CB x TB and he is kept in a bare paddock in the summer to keep his weight under control. He gets fat looking at food and is a very good doer. Getting him eventing fit was a nightmare as he needed twice as much work as my TB.

Our Cleveland Bay X lives on Hi Fi Lite and Even Keel (Badminton Feeds) which is a supplement for mountain & moorland ponies! He has 1 teacup of even keel with Hi-Fi twice a day and is out in the day. He is a very good do-er and needs his grazing monitored.
I'm afraid I think a muzzle would just make him annoyed and I would concentrate on upping the work. Don't forget lungeing is very time effective as 20 mins is about the same as 40 mins ridden.
