I use it all the time. If it's done properly, based on sound science, it's the obvious way to train - everything else is haphazard nonsense. If it's done badly, it's a disaster.
The first thing you have to teach, and keep on reinforcing, is not to mug you for treats. Getting your own timing right, and understanding how to split things down into their component parts is a tremendous discipline.
IMO, it teaches the human how to teach as much as it teaches the horse how to learn
Tried a bit when first got my youngster, he picked it up really quickly. Taught him to "say please" by lifting a hoof on command. Must do a bit more with him - OH bought a book on clicker training as we were a bit stuck for ideas.
Alex Kurland is coming to this country to give a series of clinics in the summer. She's outstanding as a teacher, and also trained with Bettina Drummon, Nuno Olivero's pupil (her mother was his sponsor) and so all of her work is geared towards achieving the softness and lightness of the classically trained horse.
I use clicking with my tongue and always have done, leaves your hands free! Have taught all the girls to lift up their heads when eating to have their rugs unfastened, click to pic up feet (the big girl still hasn't quite got it)
Beezie Madden - fantastic american showjumper - used it with great success on one of her horses who wouldn't jump open water. I think it was Authentic. It was really successful and she would just click when jumping her round.
Yes I have found that it worked on my mare. When tied up, she would continually paw the ground. The clicker stopped this. Also I used it on a friends horse who would not be shod. Friend was at a loss as to what to do as she had got 2 farriers out who tried to use brute strength, but it didn`t work. I used the clicker for a few days and on the day of the farrier coming and he stood quietly while he had 4 new shoes put on. It worked brilliantly, friend was amazed but did`nt think it would work. It does work but as said above, it needs the timing to be spot on.
It worked on our 2 dogs when pups too.
It`s how they train the dolphins.
