Morning team,

I saw clicker training mentioned on a thread earlier and had a quick google, I think I understand the concept but can anyone give me a very quick run down on how to start and how to actually clicker train a horse?

Belle would be my first 'project' as she is extremely food oriented.

A old book that I found explained the principles well is 'Don't Shoot the Dog' by Karen Pryor. It's about other animals but useful for the human side of the equation. Though everyone learns in different ways so it may do nothing for you. I found Alexandra Kurland's books difficult to read - until I watched the accompanying videos, then they made sense.

The very best way is to actually be taught by someone who knows the subject - like all horse training it's the 'eyes on the ground' at the exact moment that can ward off problems.
 
We'd end up writing you an essay - or a book!! But in essence you ask for a specified behaviour, click, then treat. Over time the horse comes to associate the click with reward and you can (in theory) step back on the treats. It also enables very precise reinforcement of the behaviour as you can click at that absolute second rather than fumbling for a treat. There are all sorts of ways to anaylse behaviours, how to break them down in order to teach them. Continuous and discontinuous reinforcement etc. Timing and observation are key. It isn't too easy to start blind and you can end up just confusing yourself and your horse.
 
I third the 'Don't shoot the dog' recommendation. Very easy to read and understand. I would book a recommended behaviourist to get you started with the basics if you're at all unsure. Timing is everything with positive reinforcement training (and food doesn't have to be the primary reinforcer - I'm using scratches with my new cob).
