Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help before I decide whether I need to get the vet out or not!

I have a 6year old TB mare, who I have been bringing back into work (she doesn't do loads maybe 4 sessions of walk/trot a week). About a month ago I noticed sometimes her back legs, around the pastern, (her right more so than left), was swollen in a morning. I put this down to her coming back into work as it seemed to be the morning after and after being in the field it went. They are ocassionally still doing it but only ever so slightly and only now and again. But I noticed a week ago that one of them has started clicking (I think it's the left). There is a small amount of heat in her pasterns but nothing major. I've noticed that coming out of the stable in a morning she's quite stiff and often stretches out her back legs when she's brought out.

Any ideas what it might be??

Thanks very much :)

Doubt its her pasterns. Sounds like her stifle clicking to me, fairly common problem, where the ligament basically catches air and creates a popping/clicking noise.

Hi
no it's not hr pastern that's cracking but thats where the slight swelling is, is it likely the two are related? Is it something I need to get the vet in for? :)

Hi, swelling that comes and goes is usually just from standing in the stable, horses are meant to be out moving around. My horse has this, its not a problem, he also has a click in his pastern. When I pick one foot up to pick out his feet, its only one one hoof and causes no problem.
