Just had the chiro for a general/new horse check up. Everything ok, just pelvis out a bit (recent) and atlas out (not so recent) - I was convinced she had a headache as she didn't like me touching the near side of her head. All now sorted. And clicky joints, well she is 12 and we all get those as we get older - something for you younger ones to look forward to! The chiro said I should give her Cortaflex. This is new to me - in my previous horsey owner life we gave oil and cider vinegar. My friend says she has tried No bute (devils claw), cortaflex, superflex (NAF) and currently uses Glucosamine 2000 by Equine America. This last is much cheaper and she has not noticed any difference. She also said that Cortaflex contains mammallian products - not the sort of thing I want to give to a herbivore. Your comments please.

I use devils claw at the moment, but only as she has strained a ligament and her leg is inflammed. I also feed her glucosamine, but this again is related to the ligament as apparently it does something or other helpful for it!

For clicky joints though, i have always fed apple cider vinegar and it works a treat for my mare (now 22).

I have had my 13 year old for three years and have given him Cortaflex every day. Not sure if it works or not, its a leap of faith, but it has not stopped him developing clicky joints. I've started to add Codlivine too but that hasn't stopped it either. He's fine, chiro comes every three months, sometimes sore sometimes not. Think the joint click is just a getting older thing

My old boy was 29 when he dies, i had him for 14 years and tried everything on the market for him, cortaflex didnt really do anything for him but the equine america Glucosamine with MSM worked wonders. I have my 10 year old on it now and he has a clicky back leg. It does still click but no where near as much, only hear it every now and again instead of everyday.

Apple cider vinegar is great, but it also increases appetite, which is not great for my fatty so i leave that out xx

Ive been using the Equine America Glucosamine for 18 months now, I wasnt sure if it made any difference so I stopped using it, My farrier noticed my horse was alot stiffer when he was shod last so I prompty put him back on it.

very good value at 15.99 and lasts 2 months

i've tried many different lotions and potions and powders and tbh i don't think any will suit every horse... afraid it is a bit of trial and error!

currently using equimins felxijoint or something - seems ok for my mare - but have sworn by plain MSM before - worked wonders on another hose - and cortaflex (worked wonders on my working dog lol) and a few of the other ones....

I think to all these products that are about only really kick in if you have used for long time before the joints start to go down hill, ie to help prevent problems occuring rather than helping exsisting ones, however I do swear by cider vinegar, it really seemed to help my old arthritic TB, gave him a new lease of life, fed it to him for years.
