My 11yr old ex pointer/team chaser has a fair bit of wear and tear for an 11yr old but I've noticed recently perhaps worse on the hard ground we've had this summer, hes quite clicky when he moves and is fairly stiff for the first 20 mins or so during exercise he's currently on equine americas Kentucky joint formula but am wondering if cortaflex or something else might be better? Thanks

Aww bless you. If it`s any consolation my lad is clicky too, he`s only 7, we literally had the vets there yesterday who told me not to worry about it if he`s not lame (which he isn`t) as most horses do it from time to time, like people, and to be fair i`m one of the worst for clicking, creaking and cracking and i`m fine lol ... I have started him on turmeric (after reading up and researching massively on it) and he has become a bit freer in his movement. I can`t comment on the Kentucky joint or Cortaflex as i`ve never used it ... but I know anything with glucosamine is supposed to be helpful for joints :)

I had a dressage horse with clicky hocks, usually when first worked but as he got fitter it disappeared completely. I also had him on Bluechip Dynamic, no idea if this helped but he was certainly looser generally and passed a flexion test aged 17!

My ex racer has one clicky hock, its worse on some days but usually he clicks a little bit every time he's on a circle. I've had a vet look who said not to be concerned unless he goes lame, she told me to try cortaflex just to see if it made any difference which it didnt! (she said if he was arthritic it would help) I try and use turmeric when i remember to buy it but i'm not too concerned, he's not uncomfortable. I'm 25 and you should hear my knees when i bend! Also OH's ankle clicks with every step and he's in no pain, some people/animals are just clicky!

I feed my horse Newmarket Joint supplement which is pure glucosammine (sorry can't spell the word!) which is brilliant but it is expensive. A month's supply is £30 or 3 months supply is either £90 from your vet or £65 from Animeddirect. I get it from the latter and a 3 month supply at a time as it works out cheaper. My horse is 23 and despite general wear and tear I haven't (touch wood) had any major issues with his joints.

I will add I keep him fit (worked 6 days a week mixed between schooling (dressage novice/elementary), lunging and hacking (this is mixed between long hill hacks plus fast work) and I think this has helped him stay supple along with the supplement. I also make sure he doesn't go 2 days in a row without work as I notice on the 2nd day that he can be a little stiff coming out of his stable.
