Quick question, i went to view a horse today, and noticed as it had warmed up that its hind legs clicked as they moved? now i really liked this horse, would this put you off, and is this a sign of anything, or can it just be a normall thing in horses ?? oh and its a 6yrold if that makes any diff

thanks

Possibly unrelated but the only I horse I have known to have this is my friends mare who has clicky joints (mainly in the morning going to her field or at the start of a hack) and has the onset of arthritis (she is 8/9 yrs). Then again my ankles click in the morning and Im only 21! If you decide to buy will you be getting it vetted first?

Not sure if it would fail or not, the only 1 of my 3 horses I didn't get vetted (touch wood!) is the only one I haven't had any problems with so far! I would have thought it depends on whether the vet did find anything as clicking can come from just a build up of air in the joint. Do you have a vet you can ring and just chat to over your concern and maybe they could give you a better idea? Also maybe ask the owner and see if they have noticed it before? I wouldn't want you to take my word for it and miss out on a great horse! lol. My friends mare has no problems/discomfort/swelling/lameness, etc.. so far from it and will happily jog (she doesn't do walk!) anywhere and everywhere, she regularly does 20km+ pleasure rides. Sorry I'm more of a pain than a help!!

My old mare (now 23) has had clicky hips throughout her life and it has never given her a days problem......so it wouldn't put me off, so long as the vet had a fair idea of why they are making the noise to start with. With Cassie, I can't remember the reason for the clicks, the main thing was that when she was vetted, the vet was unconcerned by it.

Just to make my point clear, I would defo get it vetted

I bought a 5yr old with clicky hind legs, she passed the vet with flying colours for riding club activities. i owned her for three years, she was never lame and jumped up to novice BE heights, when i sold her she passed the vetting again with flying colours and has been eventing and competing pony club for the last two years since i sold her without a problem.

BTW I would also get it vetted if I could, at very least ring vet for a chat. She will more than likely be fine but its always better to know what you are getting yourself in for as I have found from experience! I hope everything is ok with her for you

our 8yr old has clicky hocks which haven't caused him any probs in the 2 yrs we've had him, the vet wasn't concerned about it when we bought him either. Still I'd always get a horse vetted unless you know its history really well from people you trust - better to spend a few hundred than waste a few thousand!

my 8 year old horses legs clicked 6 months later he was diagnosed with arthritis if you are wanting it i suggest that you get a 5 stage vetting carried out on it

thankyou everyone, muchly appreciated, can a vet tell whether it would probs turn into arthritis, this is my big worry, like it could be fine now, but would vet tell you long term effects?

the best way they would tell is by x-rays which would cost you depends how good and suitable the horse is to you and whether you want to spend all this money on it

best thing to do would speak to a vet and see what they think could be the cause. if they think it could be something minor or unlikely to be a problem then keep considering the horse but have it vetted before you buy.
