My horse has already got MF scabs. I’ve tried wrapping g the area with cling film and sudocream but because it’s so low on the bulbs of his heel, as soon as he walks the clingfilM just rides up.

any tips on how to wrap the area so the vet wrap stays put?

I did try wrapping the back part of the foot too but it came

Hi Summit, you can achieve the exact same effect with animalintex and vet wrap. I have done it previously when my mare had quite nasty scabs - it softened the scabs and seemed to draw out some of the nasty gunk too. Her legs healed really nicely - I think I did it two days running then left them and they healed well on their own. She didn't have scabs on her heels but the advantage of using animalintex is that it won't be as slippy as clingfilm. I would wrap the vet wrap properly underneath the heel - if that still won't stay on then try vet wrapping the whole foot and then covering in tape, as you would for an abscess.

I didn't use sudocreme, I used a cream from my vet but I'd imagine the effect will be the same. However, do remember that if the mud rash is severe or the horse has swollen legs, it may need antibiotics from the vet.

OK I just wondered if you were trying to keep them clean and out of the mud. I’ve never heard of wrapping to soften scabs before but I can see why it might help. In the past I have always washed with Malaseb, dried and smothered the scabs in Lincoln Muddy Buddy with pretty good results.

thank you. Yes the leg became swollen last year and he needed steroids and antibiotics. I’m trying to keep one step ahead this year.

thanks for the animalintex tip
