So Faran has been having these strange lumps that lol up weep get itchy then go. He has them everywhere. No idea what they are from he’s been in the same feed for a year now and didn’t have them in summer. Basic feed of balancer handful of chaff and linseed with mag and now VitE added. He’s had everything but the VitE since summer but I only started the VitE two weeks ago so I know it’s not that as he’s had the bumps since October ☹️

So full clipped him to see what the issue was and because hopefully we will have a properly fitting saddle to get cracking on with as he’s Five shortly and I’m wanting to start furthering his education ?

so from this

I think he suits it ?

so the bumps any ideas?? They are scabby and looking like pimples with heads sometimes ? He loves them scratched and bleed if he goes over board ?

So I’ve got a lovely saddle to use just now and unfortunately as lovely as it is it’s not an amazing fit, but the saddler knew that it’s only temporary, it wont do him any harm it’s just not perfect.

So a friend gave me this to try and it feels
More secure but it’s too small for me realistically. Ok for walk and trot hacking but nothing else ? I’m just looking for ideas of things that fit a Welsh D with mahoooosice shoulders and no either with ribs spring like a barrel and a front to match ? wish it was bigger ?

This is the saddle I’m currently using that fits me but isn’t as secure feeling on him ?

I have another fitting for a completely different set of saddles on Monday and the black one is going back as it’s only on loan from the fitter. No slaying the fitter please as she’s doing the best with what she had and I needed to get some weight off Faran to make the fitting easier and him healthier so it was the best option available at the time ?

I'd try a high wither Thorowgood (or Kent and Masters) for him, a dressage cut will have more room for his shoulders.

The lumps look like warts/papilloma virus, they normally go away on their own on young horses.

3 out of 4 of mine have also been covered in horrid oozy bites of some sort. BBP blew up in the summer with huge welts and they took months to stop oozing and then are still horrid scabs that won’t go away now. Last time it happened I blamed flying ants but I haven’t seen them this year so no idea what it is.

The shoulder is freed by the fit, plenty of shoulder movement in a well fitted jump saddle. You need a flat open seat always gives more room, a wider seat ONLY if it fits the ribcage, a forward balance saddle (excludes almost all traditional English saddles) allows for more seat room and fitting beyond the back rib. Make sure you're as over your feet as possible, wider ribcages make it really hard to get your feet underneath you, monoflaps can really help but are seldom on the right trees etc to suit both rider (properly) and fit wider horses.

I would seriously say not to go for anything for a high wither, I would do a belly lift, or watch on the lunge to see how his shape changes, and keep working from the ground to keep the back lifted, he's more very slightly dropped in the back than he is significantly "withered". Also more downhill from the offside, so, as with the vast majority of horses, his ribcage rotates to the right. The lack of wither from this side will make it clear that a lower pommel and a flatter seat would be better.

I think he will be the same as BB and need something cut back off the shoulder, I have a thorowgood T4 if you need to try and a Wintec which is not ideal for him. Welcome to borrow them. BBs in an ideal which unfortunately isnt changeable but has been widened to fit him by shirley

I’ve just sold a T6 Cob that I used to back him that didn’t fit, it was Kia’s saddle and it just wasn’t stable on him ? but thank you ❤️

Saddler has recommended an open headed or hooped treed saddle for him, everything I’ve put on him ends up halfway along his belly ? that’s brown saddle had slipped back a little after our hack but it wasn’t as unstable feeling as the black one ? nor had it slipped back as far as that one had. I will try putting them further back ? maybe to where the brown saddle slipped to.

You are right he doesn’t have a wither (yet) he is 5 in April so I’m thinking there is still time for one to make an appearance ?

Hoping we find a solution on Monday ?? she is looking at Black Country, Ideal H&C and another brand I can’t remember now ??

I bought a few farrington saddles for Louis neither fitted they were just not wide enough, he is an xxw really and is a similar shape to your horse and my fitter recommended a black country freedom tree or something on a hoop tree.

I couldn't find one looked for ages but I managed to get a Lavinia Mitchell Dressage fir him that is on a wider flatter tree than there regular saddles, it fits him lovely and doesn't move at all and I've had issues with previous saddles moving on him.

2 of my friends had a Farringdons on their very wide cobs. When one horse retired the saddle was tried on an extremely wide owned since 2 years old WC x ID. Saddles on this horse had always perched or slipped round. The Farrington fitted perfectly. At 15 the horse has at last a saddle that fits.

Just shows that all saddles and horses are different.
Hope you can find a suitable saddle.

Oh definitely I know, a lot of showing people use them on natives and Arab's they just didn't work for mine he is notoriously difficult to fit though.

It’s the Black Country freedom tree she thinks will be best she just didn’t have one at the last fitting ?

A member in here has offered me one if it’s correct for him so fingers crossed ?? I’m loathe to buy anything new as he’s still growing and could be out of anything I buy in six months ?

Black Country on the freedom tree are super for the broader types. Although your horse is quite curved/dipped in his back profile.

Id scour FB/market place/eBay - hopefully something will come up locally that you can try. If you are flexible on type then a WH saddle would probably suit him well.

It took me 6 months, because I specifically wanted a jump, but I did eventually get my hands on a lovely BC quantum for my broad young sport horse

Regarding lumps, I’d malsab wash regularly. Don’t over rug, use a cotton under sheet and wash regularly. If fed Alfa consider cutting that out as a trial.
