hi my tb fluffy mare is about to get a blanket clip - she is in a 260 mw rug with neck in the day and a 400grm at night, do i need to get a hw for her when she is clipped on friday? just dont want to get the thickest rug poss on her yet as when the weather gets really gross i wont have anywhere to go (if you know what i mean!) should i injstead purchase an under rug. she gets turned out by the livery yard in the mornings so dont want to make it too complicated for them.if the weather is vile i can always bring her in as i am at home all day. thanks again!

Not meaning to jump on you and of course it's your decision but does she really need a 400gm rug at night at this time of year, when she isn't clipped and is 'fluffy'?

Aside from that and assuming she does need the rugs I would go for an underrug as you can be a bit clever with layering when it gets really cold. I intend on doing this with my clipped mare so I can use the rugs I already have and not have to have her in a cumbersome heavyweight all winter.

i put the thicker rug on her after advice from our old yard owner - she was really hard to keep the weight on whilst she was there so we had to do all we could to keep her warm. her stable was drafty and she was out of condition. Her neck is fluffy but apart from that she has a fine coat. I think i will go for the under rug and then when the weather does drop i shall get a hw.

ah - fair enough - drat those skinny TBs!
Go with the underrug for now then - layering is a great way to keep them warm as the layers trap air between them, allowing for more warmth (but you probably know that - lol!)

thanks - grateful for all the advice! any brand of under rug you recommend? do you think i should put it on under her hw at night too?

I have a weatherbeeta under rug which does the job nicely.
If she were my horse and was toasty in the stable rug I would leave it until the weather gets really cold.

I find a good way of checking is to feel my horse's ears - if they are warm then she is warm enough!
