Am I the only person who's horse still has half his winter clip, his neck and shoulders look stunning, but I just can't seem to shift his winter coat from his sides and rump...

Please say I'm not the only one :o

Does anyone have any tricks I can try to help encourage hair loss?

Yes, mine is exactly the same! I assume it is because he is a native. He is always the last to get his winter coat and the last to lose it!

Likes yours, his neck and shoulders are lovely - he still has the clip lines down his stomach (he only has a chaser).

No tips, though - sorry! I groom every day - it makes no difference.

No, you're not the only one. Out of the seven horses here, four still have a significant amount of winter coat. I was blaming my mare's on her Cushings, but two of the others have just as much coat left as she has, and a fourth one still has all his clip lines visible. The farrier told me they are all holding onto their coats longer than usual this year.

Had this problem last year, horse has a chaser in winter and it was still really obvious until July if I remember!
So this year, he was fully clipped out in March.
His summer coat looks great, was a bit worried clipping so late might spoil it, and the only winter hair he has is the little triangle above his tail, which is still thick and fluffy!

Put a brush over my highland yesterday and noticed he had no clip lines for the first time since October when he was clipped with a chaser. Definitely not just you. The problem I have now is, since he's a naturally hairy native, I'll have a sleek "summer" highland for a couple of months and by August he'll be thinking its time to go hairy again!! Hey ho -

Have you tried a Furminator? They really do shift hair like nothing else I've tried (and believe me, I've got the lot when it comes to hair removal!!) so might just get rid of the last bits for you.

My horse never had a 'winter coat' he didnt have the thick 'fluffy bear' look. But he had a freeze mark done at the beginning of November, the patch only became unnoticeable end of may! It was still a hair free as when she clipped it off!

He was used to living out completely rug free for 5 years, then came to me and was well rugged, so no thick coat grew... not clipping but it was annoying it took so long to grow back haha :)

My Connemara is still shedding, he's usually clipped out so this is the first time in a few years I've had to deal with clouds of hair every time I groom. He has a fly rug on most of the time, which I'd imagine is not helping, so it comes off whenever possible to let him have a good roll.

yeah, a few of the heavier types at my yard have had to be clipped as they still had so much winter coat. mine has lost hers, but it took longer than usual. she's a warmblood

I didn't clip last winter so I had 3 hairy Welshies. The two (ridden) mares were lightly rugged, the youngster was naked. All 3 have lovely shiny necks, shoulders and bums but still have fluffy ribs and bellies. They are furminated every day and are slowly losing it. As with a previous poster and her Highland, they will start growing their winter coats again in a couple of months, but I hope to have sleek shiny ponies for at least a few weeks! I used to have a Shetland who started growing his new winter coat before the old one had finished shedding - only a youngster, and no indication of Cushings. The joys of hairy natives. Sigh.
