So I broke my finger and because the horses wear different bits for schooling and hacking I thought it would be a genius idea to get clip on cheek pieces so I could swap them out more easily while my finger healed. Of course I am fully aware of the dangers of such things and as such have been extra vigilant. Until yesterday. Preparing for a hack I'd tacked up the big guy and while he was standing quietly in the stable I started to adjust his girth when all of a sudden I heard the stable door crash to the floor. And there is my horse standing there bridle broken, bit hanging out of his mouth looking at me rather surprised. Yes he had somehow managed to get one of the clips stuck under the aluminum anti chew strip and lift the stable door clean off its hinges. Thankfully he didn't appear to be harmed and the clip had broken cleanly but my husband's face when he saw what had happened was priceless.

Some years ago I put my little TB into his stable to untack him after a hack, he went to scratch himself on his side and got the ring of his bit caught on the girth buckle. With his head pinned to his side he panicked, nearly squashed me flat, fell over outside his stable, got up with his head still attached to his side and went to my daughter's horse, who was standing quietly in his stable with my daughter. He then fell over again and lay in a heap. Once I'd managed to get his saddle undone and freed his bit, he stood up and miraculously had not a scratch on him. I thought my rubber matting had been worth every penny!

Honestly I wouldn't feel too bad about it, I have clip on cheekpieces on the endurance bridle I use and despite being a head-scratcher mine has never (yet) caught them on anything. However he did once get a leg stuck in his fly rug (rolling? who knows), ripped a hole in the middle and climbed out of it backwards. Whatever you do they will find a way to injure themselves and destroy their environment. I'm sort of joking here....but not really.

ETA - I've just realised I think you mean cheekpieces that clip on to the bit, not clip on to the bridle....I've never used those. But my opinion re. injuries and destruiction still stands!
