Hi all,
Just looking for a little advice from you.
I have a hairy who is in full work but lives out 24/7.
He is a very warmblooded beast and sweats during work.....and is then dried off with a Thermatex and when dry is back out in the field.
He cannot wear a NZ as he gets too hot and sweats...and we are talking mega sweats ( I have tried a Goretex lightweight so have tried the very best).
On a warmish day he will even just sweat in the stable!
Clipping him out full and rugging is not an option as he still sweats under the NZ.
So....what are your thoughts on me possibly giving him a throat clip bearing in mind he will not wear a NZ?
This is just a thought and I welcome yours.
Thanks for reading.

I've known a pony live out happily on the side of a very bleak hill all winter with a trace clip. She was never rugged but had access to shelter and plenty of forage, she looked a lot healthier by the end of winter!

I have no issues with a small clip and staying rugless as long as there is adequate shelter and forage, I do think a rug needs to be on standby though just in case

Hmmmmm I think I might want to get that degree of sweating checked out for piece of mind.

I might risk a small bib clip without a rug, provided there was a shelter & plenty of forage but personally I wouldn't be comfortable with much more than that without a rug....but then I'm a fully paid up member of the 'I love rugging gang'

I think we are obsessed with the idea of rugging as a whole in the equine world, but it is simply not right for all horses. Nell has an apron clip and a rain sheet on as she is much too warm a horse for more. Adequate forage is a must as hay is central heating to horses and will keep them warm from the inside out. As they say 'suck it and see' you just don't know until you try these things out, some horses feel the cold and some don't so much. A minimum clip and rugless could work just fine for your horse

This. Keep an eye on weight and general well being but mine is a hairy and she sweats easily too! I feel guilty sometimes when it's reall cold but she always feels warm and looks happy.

Our Eriskay pony has wintered out happily and unrugged with a bib clip. Think we rugged her when weather really wet but the cold never bothered her.

Thanks for this:)
I should have mentioned he has massive, tall thick hedges to fend off the wind and rain, has good grass cover, and has hay when he is in...as does his friend.
If there was a podium finish for sweating ponies.....he would be a gold medallist:)

I agree your horse will be fine. Mine is very similar and has lived out naked with a neck and belly clip. He is still far too hot so he is having another clip tomorrow taking a lot more hair off, then will be wearing a rug. First time he has been rugged!

It is funny how you never think to put things in the post until someone asks..lol:)
Mrs vet has done exhaustive tests....you name it we have done it.....he is just a hot pony! If he was a human...he would be a deoderant manufaturers perfect customer!

My rising 4yr old has grown a coat like a mammoth and hes hot just mooching round the field! Hes in no work and I'm considering clipping something off to help him maintain a sensible temperature! He was born and raised in County Durham where its COLD and he now lives in Milton Keynes where its definitely milder which isnt helping! But I have no issues clipping a bit off a big hairy mammoth type of horse and then turning it out naked, so long a you have rugs available in case of extremes.

Thanks...my cob must be related:)
His weight is not so much of an issue as an obsession of mine....to keep him from getting fat.

If he is fat and furry then a bib and belly clip and no rug may help solve both problems. My pony gets fat and furry and he is living out with a bib and belly clip and is fine.

Agree with the others, he should be fine, and relieved !

I have a hairy cob that is just as yours is. He has a full clip and a rain sheet. I've never known him to be cold and he lived out during the awful winter of 2010, with natural shelter and forage and blooming well got fat. ( the ice and snow stopped play, so he just ate.)

If yours is just having a trace, don't worry about rugging. He can turn his bum to the wind and line up by a hedge if he needs to.
