The rug post reminded me-
Has anyone clipped but still got theirs out? One of mine is at the point where he really needs clipping as he's quite hairy and is sweating after a short schooling session (15 mins) so I'm thinking about a blanket clip, however I don't want to end up bringing him in yet. But I feel a bit mean leaving him out (adequately rugged) but a bit naked.

I have 3 hunter clipped (half faces) and one fully clipped (face, legs, ears off -the lot!) They will be living out all winter except for extreme conditions, with the warmest and toughest rugs and plenty of hay and shelter :) They were out clipped last year and coped very well, they only came in when it hailed, was really windy or really muddy.

I actually checked on them late at night a few times and found that they were warmer walking around in the fields eating as opposed to standing still in the stables having scoffed all the hay!

Oooh that makes me feel better! Think I'll get the clippers out now I know he's not going to freeze and keel over!

HP, not seen you on here for ages :) you at WL on Saturday?

Yes mines had a full clip & is just out in a fly rug at the mo. I have been putting a fleece over the top on a night but its pretty warm tonight so she's just in the fly rug xx

Yes I clipped one today , legs off and a sort of cross between a blanket clip and a chaser clip he's out in an elderly middle wieght rug ( so not that warm) its a wug so its got a half neck , the plan is to keep him out until the mud gets awful he will be fully clipped as soon as I have time to do more with him and I will see how it goes.

Yes, three of our four (including a TB) are fully clipped and living out. Fourth horse
will be clipped soon! They're well rugged and we'll bring them in when it gets really cold and wet. I get the impression that my liveries think we're cruel and heartless since most of them have kept their horses rugged all summer!!!!

He will be fine, he's a tough Irish horse ! :D

Not been on here as much recently, the horses are keeping me too busy ! I will be there Saturday if I'm not hunting, been taking Finn out with the Atherstone and he loves it, you should come sometime :) . He went clear on Sunday at High Cross so hoping he keeps it up, trying not to ride like an idiot and he's been jumping brill, really sorry to hear about your horse btw :( hope you are coping ok.

Mines fully clipped apart from half his face and a heart on his bum :o he's in a fly rug during the day at the moment and a LW combo on top at night. Soon to change though but he'll still be living out!

I've just taken a high trace off my boy and chucked him back out naked- and I'm in the grim north! He's been naked through the warm spell, he wasn't *that* furry and can stand to lose a good few kilos. He will be living in for a couple of weeks from Sunday as he's off to boarding school while I go to Ibiza and I thought it would be easier for them if he's clipped rather than sweating too much, but will be back out when I get back until YO declares that winter has begun and brings us all in overnight.

3 fully clipped and currently naked during the day. 1 is out at night in a 100g turn out, 1 has a no fill turn out and I've just been outside and swapped the stabled pony from a 100g stable rug to a cotton sheet because he was too warm.

Fully clipped (including face and legs) and he was out without a rug today, after I noticed he was sweaty under a rainsheet! It is very mild here though, I've been riding in just a t shirt...

Yup, Genie is fully clipped and out at night still. She was at Matt's last week for schooling and he rugs way more than me, but even he kept her rugging to a minimum as she was getting hot!

Why do you have to bring him in if you clip? Just rug up well and they can easily live out clipped. I have often given my competing horses hunter clips over our harsh winters and left them out 24/7. As long as they are rugged well, fed well and have access to shelters (I leave my stable doors open so they can come and go as they like) then they're absolutely fine.

Mine has a low trace/irish clip and has been naked in the day, sheet at night. Out in the field 24/7.

He's a wussy warmblood so will be having a 100g combo on at night if the weather forecast is right with dropping temps.

Mine. Hunter clipped and in a LW rainsheet type rug, no neck, out 24/7 until the clocks change. Although it's meant to be getting really cold at the end of this week so I will put him in a rug with filling then. Staying out though. He has loads of grass, he is fine.

Traditional,- will be hunter clipped at the weekend and back out. He's been sweating after a few minutes of work as quite a dense coat up now, so clipping for us personally makes exercise much easier and no waiting around for him to dry off before going back out.

He does come in late morning for a few hours so he's there ready for me when i arrive at the yard after work, ready to do some exercise.

Mine live out and I normally do a chaser with a LW rug too. If it snows I put the MW on. If its bucketing down for days on end and i'm feeling nice I might spoil the ones with a short mane and put the hood on.

This year they'll be in very very light work so I just clipped off the under half of the neck and belly to about 4 inches past the girth. They will be naked all winter. If its bucketing down for days I might stretch to a rain sheet. Again if I'm feeling nice!

Even taking off the tiniest bit of hair seems to make a difference. Mine were very sweaty after 20 min lunge or 40 mins on Horse walker. After taking off the neck and belly they are quite warm but not sweaty after light exercise.

Mine had a bib clip last winter and was out naked the whole time, she grows loads of hair and ends up sweating in our mild winters.

One of mine clipped and l/w rug on - but put m/w on last night - difficult to know what to put on, especially when I can only get up to yard once a day. They are out 24:7 at mo, but come in at night once ground conditions get wet. other horse full coat and wish I had booked clipping earlier! Booked for 1/2 term so not too long, I suppose.

Had mine fully clipped (apart from legs) and living out no problems. Naked during the day (unless raining) until temperature starts to dip below 10 degrees C roughly.

Mine are out clipped every winter. They are well rugged and do come in at night but to be honest they come in when they have to. If its a milder night and they are not waiting to come in and feel warm enough they have dinner and hay and stay out overnight also!
I don't fully clip though!

Mine gets a blanket clip and lives out all winter with adequate rugs but he's generally quite a hot horse anyway. He's not clipped yet but has been getting very sweaty lately as its been so mild but now its going a bit colder I may see if I can hold out with the clippers for a bit longer! But I know a few people who have fully clipped native types and they are out in just a rainsheet at the moment and are perfectly fine :)
