Does anyone have any experience of clipping at this time of year (pretty novice owner here!)

My mare (little chunky cobby type) is out at grass through the summer. She had her last clip of the winter in February (a bit late I know but she really needed it).

She's not as fit as she was through the winter (was training hard for hunting), and now she's getting sweated up after an hour's schooling.

Current workload is an hours (hard) schooling which includes 2 full hour lessons 4 or 5 times a week plus 2-3 hacks of 90-120 mins.

We've got a 15 mile pleasure ride in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering about clipping her out for it.

Should she be rugged up at this time of year overnight or would most horses cope OK?

Ta!

My cob needed clipping all year round as he had a thick coat, used to sweat lots and was doing a fair bit of work. When it was cold he'd wear a rug at this time of year at night. In summer (he lived out at night) he was generally fine with no rug though when it rained he was quite susceptible to rainscald if he wasn't wearing a turnout (seeing as he had no coat to protect him) so I'd put a lightweight on if I knew it was going to be wet!

mine was fully clipped all winter and has been out since feb!!! he was double rugged until march then in april he had on rug on and has hardly worn one atall this month-only in severe rain and then its only a lightweight waterproof one. if you feel better for him being clipped for it then do it-its not going to do him any harm!!

I try not to clip this late because you end up clipping the summer coat as well. If the they normally shed out alright then try grooming more to encourage them to shed. If they are really overheating you have to clip. Just make sure you can keep them warm when they need to be. Still groom lots, it will encourage good hair growth.

My friend clips her cobby mare every month throughout the year as she's so hairy and sweats buckets - the horse I mean, not my friend!!

She hacks, schools and does the old dressage class at local show, but not showing, so doesn't really matter what horsey looks like, just that she's comfortable

I clipped my Shetland out fully a while ago, and think I'll do him again, as he's sweating round his armpits just standing out in the field. That attracts the flies so much more, and must feel horrible, so have no qualms about hacking hair off again. He's got a rug if it gets cold.

I clip my cob all year round, last time i did her was 2/3 weeks ago. I fully clip her, head and all, and she looks pretty damn good. Actually in the last week her summer coat has really come out and she is very shiny. I also clip her because she gets very sweaty even though shes very fit.

Here she is when i did her last-

A lot of people will say it ruins the summer coat, but it really didn't for Flo, it actually made it a lot nicer. Hope that helps.
