i presume clipped horse are at risk of sunburn? would anyone be concerned about this on a sunny day like today?
My field has no shade and my horse was out naked yesterday and this morning, ive just popped a fly rug on as i was worried :/

On the note of fly rugs do they help keep horses cool or is it just another layer of heat?

I will let you know tonight when I see my mare.

I dont use fly rugs as it makes my horses too hot (and the ones with the rain sheet built in is even heavier) I do use fly masks and spray though :) My horses have spent weeks and weeks in rugs, I refuse to put another rug on them until I have to!

That was my thinking then i suddenly thought uh oh!
He is pink anyway but he was looking a bit more pink, hopefully might have just been my eyes. Not overly concerned about flies as i have spray but being fair and freshly clipped i am wondering.

When mine was hogged and clipped last summer he wore an Aussie Amigo when it was hot and sunny. He stayed cool under it and it stopped him burning :)

Yes horses can burn, especially pink skinned ones.
Yes a close clip can increase the likelihood of a horse burning.
Is this weather hot enough to burn a horse? Possibly yes, in a pink skinned clipped horse.
Do fly rugs make a horse hotter? Kind of depends on the horse and the fly rug. Some seem to get quite hot others it seems to help.

Whenever I’ve clipped out the competition horses in the summer then they have been brought into stables during hottest part of day and worn sheets when out.

Unfortunately my boy suffers with photo-sensitivity and burns very easily in the sun as soon as the uv hits 4 he can burn. So he is in his stable in the day. He goes out at night with an sweet itch rug which has UV protective and UV protective boots if the uv is still around 3 at 6pm just too keep him protected :)

My friend's freshly clipped coloured cob got quite badly burned one summer. She just never thought about it and felt very stupid and guilty (having said that they field has plenty of shade so maybe he played a part!). He now wears a UV protection rug until he has a bit more coat to protect him. He needs clipping all year round as he grows a very thick coat even in summer and he's an exceptionally sweaty horse even just standing in the field. Despite this he's never been too sweaty under a UV rug.
