Hi,
I have always been so impressed

as how beautifully the horses tails are pulled/clipped in the UK.

Can anyone give me advice as to how one goes about clipping a tail? My horse hates having it pulled.

Many thanks

Barons tail - this actually needed doing again so has a bit of a toilet brush look

I trim with scissors down each side, from the underneath of the dock and take it about an inch or so in. Then I just get my trimmers and trim it right down. I leave the middle compleatly. It actually looks really good when its just been done, but you have to keep doing it or it does just look like you have hacked it with the scissors (as in the above pic).

Hmm, pulling is the best way to get a neat finish. Otherwise, you can use scissor and cut very short down the side of the dock in a half moon shape, and then trim the hair on top but dont cut it so it is spiky!! The other way is to use a "stripping comb" to thin the hair.....cutting isnt really great!!

I've got a tail rake - there's been loads of threads on them in the past.

They are pretty well idiot proof, which is why I've got one!! It makes the whole pulling thing quick & easy.

i pull the worst or thin the underneath a lot..then use a comb with a blade.

just keep on top of it and try to leave the middle longer-just take out some bulk

Run the clippers up each side and underneath of the tail, but dont do anything to the front - looks v neat and you wont loose as much of the fullness of the tail.... plus it isnt as noticably bog brush like if you dont trim v often!!

Clippers are not the way to go - they leave prickly stubble which looks horrible and is uncomfortable for the horse. Tails should be pulled.

I always used to pull tails in my TB days (before my conversion to hairy horses). Nowdays when doing friend's horses for them, I use a tail rack to great effect on those who don't like pulled tails, and now personally prefer to use one as it us quicker and less painful. They are also good to get a pulled effect on manes that are very thick or the horse hates having the mane pulled.

When pulling do a little at a time - pulling a tail from scratch can take a week or you will make the horse sore. Once done, 5 minutes a week will keep it in shape.
