Thinking of getting my own clippers as have to pay £50 for a full clip on my yard and figure I'd get my money back pretty quickly.

So, questinos is, if you use your clippers say three-four times a year max do they still need an annual service?

How often do the blades need sharpening?

How much do you normally pay for servicing?

Thanks in advance

£50 for a full clip? Ouch!

I don't think you'd need them servicing every year if you only do 3 or 4 clips. Mine do more like 20 clips between services and I haven't had a problem with them!

How frequently your blades need sharpening will depend mainly on how clean your horse is when you clip, and how much you clip off. It's a good idea to have a spare set in any case. I will only clip clean, non-greasy horses with mine, and I do 4 or 5 clips between sharpenings I think.

The servicing charge depends on whether they need any new bits, it's not hugely expensive though.

I have Hauptner 2000 x 2 pairs, I have one set of very fine blades on each and these clip 3 horses at least 4 times a year and that is everything out including legs and face. I have had my clippers serviced once in 9 years and the blades sharpened every two years. Servicing is about £100 plus P&P and sharpening is £3.95 per blade I use the manufactures who sold me the clippers (Richey) they are up in Yorkshire they used to be Brookwick Ward, never had a problem with them and been using them for about 15 years.

Ok,
I had some of the same Q's about a week ago. I bought my own clippers (lister liberty) about 2yrs ago after thinking the same thing about getting my money back.

I have had to buy a 2nd set of blades, 1st set died whilst clipping last week.

I took my blades to this place (link below). £6.50 to sharpen blades which I think is very reasonable. I also asked about servicing them. They charge £20 (I think) to service them & reckon that mine need doing every 3 yrs. I clip 2 horses 2 or 3 times a yr.
Very impressed with their service & not trying to fleece money out of me!!

clippers of low use should be serviced and pat tested every second year. annually if used frequently. blade sharpening varies from 4 to 7 pounds per set and will do a few clips according to how clean, how dirty density of coat etc. legs heads and line clips will take a while to look decent?

pat testing is reguired every year if used by a company if private pat testing is for peace of mind.
servicing well what can i say you take them apart clean the bearing regrease and change the brushes if there low.
also i would be carfull where you send your clippers to i have a set in from the race yard that was serviced this spring new armiture etc. was in use they went bang so insted of them sending them in they asked me to look at them.
capacitor has cracked open and is arking to the pcb live the brushes are nearly worn to the spring.
if it was me replacing the armiture i would have replaced the brushes.
