How important is it to use the manufactures own clipper oil or is any clipping oil ok to use? I have Lister clippers which came with a tiny bottle of oil but its starting to run out.

Any thoughts?

I use 3in1 Oil if that's what I have to hand. At the moment I am using Lister oil on Arena clippers. So no I do not think it's important to use manufactures own oil. Just make sure it's oil and don't got for WD40 which I assumed was a lubricant and it's not :o

does your manual specify a grade? If yes then I'd just use the same grade and not worry too much about the manufacturer. Don't use WD40 though!

It doesnt state a grade I dont think but does recommend to use lister oil, thought this might just be a marketing ploy ? :s

DO NOT USE WD40 your warranty is void as soon as you use it and we do know!!!
Lister do a very good oil but don't go for the spray can types, it's not very good and can make the blades ran very hot

Can i ask why WD40 is so bad? Just i lent my clippers to a girl on my old yard and noticed she was using WD40 in place of oil but thought nothing too much of it- assumed would do the same job!

It becomes hot when the blades move as it doesn't reduce friction. It will also strip the grease off the internal workings of your clipper motor. Basically it is clipper death juice!

I think I mentioned in my post that WD40 isn't a lubricant. It just removes the moisture. Oil lubricates - WD40 doesn't! I am sure a man could go into it in more detail but I can't :p

ah, ok- you did yes sorry!

I personally havent used my clippers in ages as i had a clip-o-phob horse, however i had the blades sharpened and someone else just used them and apparently scalped their horse- could this be why? I dont understand why else it may have happened as they worked fine last time they clipped a horse?

thanks everyone, to be honest when I used the cheap brand I did notice the blades ran hotter and didnt clip as well. Think I will bite the bullet and get the liveryman or lister stuff. Ta :)
