Went to clip this evening, turn clippers on to test tension was okay then they just shut off. Turned them back on and same again. Repeated for a while to see if it was maybe extension cable but no done the same at the wall. Took blades off, same again. Then they ran normally. Blades back on and back to stopping.

Any ideas before I send them away somewhere or strip them down? No obvious hair blocking anything. They worked fine 6 weeks ago. Heiniger Progress.

I have the same clippers I would run the tension right down dismantle the front metal bit that holds the blades, oil inside that bit and leave it for a bit then push the metal clip holder back put your oiled blades in then tension them.

Are you sure your blades are on the right way I've put them on back to front before its easily done ?

I have no idea what’s going on. I took them home to strip down. They ran fine with no blades. Put blades back on albeit not as tight, and they work! Really hope they don’t pack in through clipping. I’m wondering if the extension lead was faulty and they cut out for a safety reason? It was a sporadic decision yesterday to clip as I had spare time, ended up borrowing an extension reel so maybe it wasn’t right.

Thats weird at least there working now though I realy rate the progress clipper hate clipping with anything else now as they never seem as good.

Mine are quite old now as well I think they were the first model.

Could it be the extension lead also I'm assuming you can't test if they are cutting when at home, so maybe they look OK but still won't cut as you wouldn't know.

Are they due a service?

Could be the motor or the circuit board. If the motor's getting a bit old then any load on the clipper will draw more current which will pull the voltage down and cause it to cut out. Or there could be a dry joint on the circuit board somewhere causing a similar symptom. We've replaced both on ours over the years, it's easy enough to do and we've always done the cheapest one first - sometimes we've been lucky, others not so and we've had to buy both.

They're off to Clippersharp. Very strange, they work, then they don't work. I wonder if to do with tensioning as the tighter they are seems to affect them. If you loosen the tension they seem to work. Obviously not right anyway so we'll see what they say.

Okay so these have been sent away for inspection. They’re knackered, unless I replace the circuit board and the motor. So with those replacements and a service we’re looking at £196. Crumbs.

So. Do I buy new?! I can get the same pair like for like for £230 with a set of blades included and 2 year warranty.

Or I can get a pair of Listers with a whole load of add-ons for £240 I think it was.

Skeptical over Listers as I had a pair of them years ago and I found them a bit rickety but they were old. I do like the Heinigers.

I've just bought the Lister Star package (bag, trimmers, oil, extra blades, 3 year warranty) £180. I couldn't get on with my friends heavy duty pro type clippers and have clipped this weekend with mine no problem. It depends how many horses you are clipping, the Star are not promoted to clip all day, but I have one (very hairy) horse so it will be a monthly clip. I think a repair at that price isn't worth doing

AS you aren't an electrician try to rule out various things that may be wrong. Plug the clippers into a wall socket without the extension lead, if it works then the extension is faulty. If the clippers do the same, run & then stop |I would suggest you send them for service with a note saying what's happening. Normally you should get them back within a week all sorted.

Fine so far - but as a novice clipper I do some and then tidy with my Wahl trimmers. Haven't worked out how to do elbow area by myself......

You need to be fully flexible, double Jointed, a contortionist and an Olympic level gymnast to do the elbows ??

Or have no fear of health and safety ...

I pull the leg forward and hold it forward with the horses knee crooked over my knee whilst half doing the splits bending over to see what I am doing ?

I borrowed some lister stars when mine packed in halfway through a clip and they were nicer than mine, which are liverymans. They didn’t get as hot.

I was most grateful as I had literally clipped one side of him. He looked ok from either side but rugging would have been complicated.

I just bought the same again, albeit a slightly upgraded model I think. I've been really pleased with the Heinigers. These new ones have a very fancy purple colour to them!

Hi that's a really good price , where did you get them from ? Just on the off chance that price might still be around.

Do you - or anyone else- know which blade I should use on a cob ? (Body , not feather or mane ).

Mole Valley in Bucks - they weren't available mail order for some reason. Hairy cob you what the medium blade

When I bought our clippers there were not as many companies making them. I bought from a long running supplier namely Wolseley, in fact the 'Wolseley Swift'. They advertised it as designed for someone who has got 2 horses. They are not the quietest of clippers, specially when you have got the tension correct when they 'clatter'. They have never let me down, I have probably 5 sets of blades & send them for sharpening after 3/4 clips. I find that once you have the blades sharpened you never get as many clips out of them than when they were new. My clippers are immaculate, always cleaned & oiled prior to putting them away. I don't leave them in cold damp places so no rust on blades. I have had them serviced a few times & after having them for 22 years they still work perfectly. Over the years I have seen new suppliers come to the market, cordless, power pack on a belt around your waist, battery packs attached to them & have seen most fail at some time yet my 'oldies' just continue to work well. If anyone needs clippers that really work well & are sturdy you must consider Wolseley. (I don't have anything to do with the brand, I am just a happy user.
