Hi
I normally pay someone else to clip my horse however she has given up with the service and I'm left faced with the prospect of doing it myself

(my clipping usually looks like I've been at it with a fork and spoon

) Anyway, i only have the one horse which i clip just twice throughout the winter. He's a very very fine thoroughbred who doesn't grow much hair. Would medium or light weight clippers be ok? Obviously I don't want to spend anymore than necessary but I've seen the warnings about cheap clippers available on the internet and want to avoid anything dangerous.
Any recommendations would be very welcome
Many thanks in advance

Would recommend a Wolseley Swift as a good 1 to 3 horse clipper. Not to noisy and has been around a while. Rarely causes problems and not to expensive, try Clippersharp, or Hcs or Clippers HG, all on the net, or find your local stockist.

I have 2 neds - never clipped a horse before in my life but bought the Liveryman ones that come with a re-chargeable powerpack that you clip to your belt so no trailing wires. They come with 2 different heads and the coarser one did a good job on my section D even though I was crap at it. Instead of looking like a gleaming liver chestnut superstar, Sunny ended up looking as if he had had a nasty accident with a Flymo! But that was my fault. I still managed to shave a perfect heart in his bum that made the vets smile every time (made some people want to throw up but I loved it!) I expect to be MUCH more confident this time. The Liveryman clippers are quiet, easy to use, no mains cables trailing and they run for 2hours off a single charge. Ideal for the 1 or 2 horse owner.

My clippers are Avalon (think they are made by WAHL), they are in one of the horse catalogues (so you can check picture) but can't remember which one. I got mine from my tack shop though. They are rechargable and come with a carry case so you can bung it over your shoulder (I use a bum bag). They were about £200. They are quiet and have ceramic blades (you don't have to get them sharpened as much). I think they are great I've hogged, done thick feathers on cobs and clipped my geld's body. Excellent for 1 horse person and nifty for getting into those hard to reach places!! Cant remember how long the charge is for though.

I tried light weight clippers on my tb and ended up paying out twice.I have bought lister liberty hands free they are a bit more expensive but will clip for over 2 hours.Three of us on our yard have the same and we all recommend them.
