My Shetland always grows far too much coat for the weather here (not his fault- he was born on Shetland and is expecting minus ten, rather than the mild average of 6 degrees here at the moment) so I normally clip him. This year, however my old clippers have finally given up, so I'm looking for a new set (they don't make my old ones anymore).
This year seems to have brought on the thickest coat yet, and I struggled to borrow clippers from friends that would cut through it- the main problem seemed to be the coat was so dense, the comb part of the clippers pushed the hair away rather than slid between it, meaning the hair never actually reached the blades. Would coarser blades help with this?
The clippers I borrowed in the end were wolseley harrier clippers, and these took me 4 hours and 2 sets of blades to fully clip (not including legs or head). Even though they clip my friends native easily.
I need something heavy duty enough for the Shetland, but also something not too noisy as I also clip my mums horse, and he was a quivering wreck in the stable next door when he heard the sound of my friends clippers- my old ones were very quiet!! Ideally nothing too expensive either, I'm a bit broke after xmas!
TIA
