Clipper recommendations?

I am mortified. My rough collie x Jack Russell has a medium weight double coat, that is heavy around the bum, with long feathers on his back legs.

While I’ve been brushing out the back and sides of his bum after hydrotherapy sessions, I hadn’t realised he’s been amassing big matts on the insides of his rear thighs. It was only when I was visiting a couple of days ago, and he rolled over to have his belly rubbed that I saw them. They’re only visible/accessible when he’s completely upside down.

Can anyone recommend a good clipper brand, so I can get these things off him?

Or would it be best to go to a groomer?

He’s never been to a groomer before - he’s 11.5, arthritic, and post-cruciate op; and these matts can’t be accessed unless he’s totally relaxed and upside down on his back.

I would say to his vet for sedation and clipping there, but he also has a heart murmur and so any sedation is best avoided if possible.

Please help, I feel absolutely awful.

Can you not just scissor them out? I'd try with a little pair of scissors and do a bit at a time rather than clippers - the noise and vibration can be a bit worrying for them.
Equally I'm sure a decent groomer could whizz them off. I don't think I'd bother buying clippers though - once you've sorted them you know to keep on top of brushing there

I wouldn’t want to go at these with scissors tbh, they’re large matts not little knotty bits, and they’ve got quite close to the skin.

My ex has a pair of cordless clippers or his hair which are very quiet, but I don’t think I’d get away with using them on the dog’s bum!

Only if he finds out...
Sounds like the perfect solution tbh

HA. I actually tried them a couple of days ago when I first found the matts, and they worked well but the battery was nearly dead and I didn’t know where the charger was - that gave me the idea to get my own pair. I won’t tell if you don’t!

Have you got horsey trimmers? They will do the job. I have several sets of dog clippers but I also buy cheap £20-£30 dog clippers from Amazon for doing hygiene areas and pads. These will happily get through small amounts of matting, won’t break the bank and are actually really handy for doing certain areas on sensitive dogs.
