I had to change the blades on my clippers today as they were blunt, but after about 10 mins into clipping with the new sharp ones on the actual clippers were so hot i had to put them down. The blades themselves were roasting too, and they never went even the slightest bit warm before i changed them. Is this cos ive tensioned them too much or not enough?? the cippers are brand new, and have clipped 9 horses out on the one set of blades before i had to change them. bit of a numpty question!!

probably they are too tight i'd say the wee tension bolt is supposed to go as tight as you can without force and then one and a half times back but then i do two times back just depends really i have new clippers and have never expeircanced this yet

you could try pming TheEngineer, hes the clipper expert round here and was really helpful via pm for me regarding my clippers

I would suggest pm to TheEngineer too as different brands have different techniques for tensioning AFAIK.
If the actual clippers themselves were hot, would also be worth checking the air vent wasn't blocked - mine needs cleaning out 3 times or so during a clip if the horse is dusty/greasy, otherwise the clippers get too hot.

I h ad exaclty the same problem with new blades. I showed them to my husband (an engineer) and he found that the bits that run in the tracks to keep the blades aligned were too tight on the new blades. He reduced them for me in his workshop, but you probably aren't so lucky. If you still have problems you might need to take them back. Mine are Listers and the blades were Lister branded.

I agree totally with the turning the bolt but would like to add that after 1 1/2 turns turn them on and slowly loosen the bolt further (may only be a tiny bit needed) but the sound of the blades will change, they will go a lot higer in pitch & sound smoother. you will know when this happens, just make sure to turn slowly!! when the noise changes, stop turning & the blades are at the correct tension.

the tighten and then turn back 1.5 times is a lister thing!! Heigner s are slightly odd to tension correctly. have you read the manual? i only tighten til they clip and save tightening for when the blades start to not cut! have you oiled them enough? is the motor running at the right speed?
