Hi

My boy normally has to be sedated to be clipped but last night I managed to clip his whiskers and trim his legs with a very quiet set of dog clippers. These are far too small to tackle his body but does anyone know of a set of clippers that are very quiet and capable of doing a full clip?

sorry i dont - but i managed to clip my mares head and neck last nite with human hair clippers hehe as normal clippers are broken

Moser avalon clippers, the cordless ones, are very quiet. Only donside is it takes longer as the blades aren't as wide as other clippers.

I have clipped a frightened TB that always had to be sedated before with a set of Moser Rex clippers (think they're the corded version of the Avalon but don't quote me on that!) which are actually meant to be dog clippers I think. They are very quiet, seem to just hum not rattle. As long as the coat is clean and not too long they will do a good job especially if you get a spare set of blades too and give frequent oiling of blades and breaks to cool clippers down. If necessary, you can use the graders that come with them to take off the very long hair first then use the basic blades to finish off.

Have you tried recording a tape of clippers, even noisy ones and leaving it on whenever you are grooming or doing something; that way, horse gets used to the noise, it's another 'thing' that happens normally not a big deal when you actually do get the clippers out? That's worked for a lot of horses as it's the basic noise that has been the frightening thing.

Whatever you do, don't get hurt, better an untidy horse than that.

I have a ring tone of a shaver - played it to Donkey, she went for me

I have the Avalon ones too - they are good, however I still have to use Sedalin and a twitch.

Hi

My previous horse wouldn't let anyone near him with usual heavy duty clippers. I bought the Wahl Pro ones which are extremely quiet and spent some time each day over the period of say a week getting him used to the sound of them outside his stable. Progressed to running them over his body and successfully managed to clip just his neck and belly the first winter. Second winter no problems at all and gave him full clip, got to the stage he would go to sleep, not bothered at all. Really good clippers with enough power to do full clip but just need to take your time. Really recommend them.

Wahl Moser Avalons - also good because they have a battery pack which means if the horse moves suddenly, and you move out the way, you aren't worrying about getting the lead tangled up or them stepping on it! First year I had my horse I needed a twitch to do him, last year he was fine! I have spent all summer clipping off his whiskers with wahl trimmers too to desensitise him some more - hopefully next year I can leave them on!!
