How long do your clipper blades last between sharpening, and roughly how many clips do you get out of them before they are blunt?

Also can anyone recommend a decent blade (that will fit Liveryman clippers) that holds it's edge as I am fed up of having to get my Liveryman blades sharpened every time I use them. I adore the clippers but the blades are driving me loopy. I have had a newly sharpened set go blunt after clipping half a pony, and I'm pretty sure that isn't the norm!

I use a Lister Liberty clipper & the blades usually do around 5 clips however I use cattle blades on the Shetland as the lanolin in his coat will blunt blades very quickly otherwise. So it depends on the type of coat being clipped as to how long they stay sharp. Are you sure you are running at the correct tension & using oil frequently as you clip. also there is a cheap clipper oil on the market now which is so thin as to be useless buy a good thick oil. Hope this helps a bit.

Have you got the tension correct on your blades, as being too tight or too loose will blunt them quite quickly. Also agree with making your horse as clean as possible before clipping

Thanks for the tips :)

My clippers are Liveryman Harmony so they blades don't require tensioning so that shouldn't be an issue.

Half clipped pony is very wiry when he has his winter woolies on so it is probably his thick coat that knackered them! He could probably do with cattle blades but I don't think they sell any that fit my current clippers, I'll just have to invest in a couple more sets so I can finish him in one sitting.

I use the own brand clipper oil as I've got a load of it, it seems pretty good and I use it every 5mins or so when I am clipping so I don't think I am being too tight with it.

I'll try bathing him really well next time to get him extremely clean, rather than the usual sufficiently clean. Hopefully that will make the blades last a little longer.

I have the same problem with those clippers - I have to have him sedated to do him & I always end up only getting half done before clippers pack in :( I've been told its better if he's had a bath not just a brush - god knows how I'm going to do that in the middle of winter though!!!
