After recommendations for clippers as my two older boys are really struggling in the heat. Gutted but for their welfare coats need to come off. They are both long & double coated – any recommendations for this type of coat please before I invest?

Are they GSDs? I really wouldn't clip them...they have the coats they have for a reason and it gets pretty hot in their country of origin...the double coats keep them cool as well as keeping them warm.
Groom them to within an inch of their life, certainly, keep them as lean as you can and as fit as their age allows, plenty of access to water, paddling pools, hosepipes, wet towels...but I wouldn't clip them out, as a long coat owner with an undercoat (he is black and it was 30 degrees here on Monday) - JMO though x

Thank you :) I really don’t want to do it. We’ve always managed previously and in hotter weather too, I guess the difference now is their ages at 11 and 13. It’s hit me like a wall that they’re two little old men now. Off outside now it’s cooler for a mass coat raking session.

I have it all to look forward to! Mine's old owner moved him on because he didn't want to be bothered with the coat maintenance.
He was really blowing tonight after tracking and it was 8pm, bless him.
My old shortcoat had a really heavy coat, he didn't even like being in the house and slept outside even in cold weather.

Have you access to deeper water/river/sea? Swimming/wading is a great (and lazy :p) way to get rid of dead coat.

If you belly clip it will allow faster cooling without taking off all the coat.
Take out armpits, a six inch band down the centre and a T shape down the inner thighs (as if clipping a coated bitch prior to whelping.)
A good compromise and much more comfortable for the dogs.

I am getting daily calls to clip dogs as they are too hot and most do not need clipping. The ones that are "desperate" (their owners words) don't turn up when invited for a quick, fit em in, belly clip and I seen a few dogs with sunburn this past week. Coat protects skin.

It takes a professional clipper to do any work on double coats. Much better to invest in a bladed rake for oldies.http://simpsons-online.co.uk/cgi-bi...tml&WD=simpsons&PN=dematting.html#aSIM_2d135P
