I have Heiniger Progress - if you're looking for clippers which are quiet then these are your best bet (I can clip my mare without having to get the vet to sedate if I use these clippers). They are also really comfortable to use if you have smallish hands. Can't comment on the Hauptner's although I had a pair years ago which were good.
I have had the heiniger progress for a couple of years and am pleased with them (I only have 1 horse to clip), before that I had the hauptner 2000. They were great but broke twice and the person who repaired them said they had such a powerful motor that it burnt itself out?! Using fine blades on the heinger gives a better clip.
Out of the two, I would go with the progress, hauptner IMHO have lost the plot over the last few years and are not the quality brand they used to be. I see far more Hauptner motor powered machines totally fried than I do heinegar. Just learn to get the tension right and use a decent oil for lubricating your blades and you will be fine...
After a lot of research (and reading The Engineers posts) I bought a pair of Progress about 3 weeks ago. Their reported reliability and price swung it for me and I am very pleased with them. It was my first time clipping and found them easy to use.
My mare is very good to stand to be clipped so wasnt too concerned about the noise factor but I found them to be very quiet (as much as clippers can be). Some clippers seem to blow hair over you but I didnt have this problem with the Progress. I also liked the fact they were pretty light compared to a lot of clippers. A friend has a set of Listers (heavy duty ones) and they are very heavy. I wouldnt like to do a full clip with them.
So its a big thumbs up for the Heiniger Progress from me
Definitely Heineger- have had Heineger in the past and they were v reliable, previously owned hauptner 2000's and sorry but they are dreadful clippers to use, unreliable, problems with tensioning, and the blades are so precise to sharpen I used to have to send them to the Hauptner UK agent for sharpening as they were the only people that could sharpen them properly. I now have a pair of Listers and they are fab clippers, I'd go for Lister or Heinger!!
Hi there, i have been lurking on here for sometime, but not been brave enough to post, yet! so here goes... I have a question please, for theengineer on Hauptner clippers, I have a pair of Hauptner clippers which I bought secondhand about 5 years ago, (theink they are called the Rapide Model?) they work fine and i only clip about 5 times a year. but, I sometimes have problems getting the tension correct on them and the blades dont seem to cut as well and blunt up quickly would I still be able to get a user manual for them from anywhere so i understand how to use them properly. thanks
