Clippers - how long do they last?

How many clips would you get out your average clippers before they start falling apart? I can't find any info on this on internet

I have Lister neons, about 5 years old, done a couple of clips each year. But now the motor has gone (according to repair people), and will be £85 to fix

. I've just paid £35 to get them serviced too...

Does this sound right? I would have thought they should do lot more clips before they pack in? They have done many feather clips, but thats only 10 mins every few months

I wouldnt be very happy about that! I've had my heingers for 10 yrs, done 10 clips a year approx, kept them cleaned and maintained and they're still going strong (hope i havnt jinxed them now!!)
 
y Wolseley's are 14 yo this year - used to doing about 20 clips a season, now do about 8 (no longer on livery yard

My Lister clippers are 12yo - I've used them every year on at least two horses, clipping them through the winter. I have them serviced once every two years, but they are still going strong!

. Its so annoying, I either don't get them fixed, so just wasted £35 plus cost of new clippers, or I pay £120 (in total) on clippers that I could replace for not much more than that. Aaaaaaarrrggghhh

This is the first year I've had them serviced - I wonder if thats the problem....

Saying that I doubt I'll be getting them serviced again, why pay £35 when they don't even check the moter or run them before they send them back!
 
Your clippers should definately last longer than that....I've got Wolseley Swifts & have had them years & they are working perfectly.
Were yours working prior to sending them to service? If they were I suggest you contact the servicing engineer & ask him what he's done to them as they no longer work.

, send them back. But I'd literally just picked them up from being serviced and they were not working. I think I'll give them a ring, but because they are being repired through a tackshop it confuses things a bit.

If they should last longer than this I might be as well getting them fixed. I wasn't going to bother if they only have a working life of 5 or 6 years.

Arrgghh, I just don't understand how they can be serviced and yet they didn't notice the motor was about to go!

Mine are nearly 30 years old, and had a replacement motor about 7 rears ago. They were used a lot as well as I clipped during the summer as well as winter, and did a lot of clipping for other people at weekends. I would be well annoyed if I was in your position, but as they are 5 years old its hard to complain as there is no way you can prove how much they have done

At least your motor is a sensible price, mine was nearly £200

I have Lister Neons, but haven't done that many clips with them (my horses are feral and I'd have to lassoo them first).
I did lend them to some f***wit friend to clip her GP loan horse...she gave them back with a hoof scrape through to the metal of the cable. I freaked and she thought I was just being precious about the clippers....oh, and she wasn't using a circuit breaker

I had Hauptners in the UK - not the cheapy glitzy ones you get nowadays but the black brick-type ones. They never broke down in all the years I had them (and that was many!). I had them serviced every year, would get about 2 or 3 full clips out of one set of blades before needing re-sharpening. The little white block (50p cost) used to be changed every 5th or 6th full clip.

They were great!
 
I think if mine were proper heavy duty ones they would have lasted better

, but they were more expensive than mine...

I think this could be partly my fault for not getting them serviced enough, not getting the blades sharpened often enough and generally not looking after them. Ah well, thats an expensive lesson learnt

My beloved Lister Stablemates have just come back from having a complete overhaul - cost me £45 with postage and new parts. They were bought in 1991 and have three overhauls since I bought them.

I probably do about 10 - 15 full clips a year with them.
 
like Tia my hauptners - black bricks !- are going strong after 26 years - about 8 clips per year and never been serviced other than by myself taking them apart for a thorough clean every 3 years or so (i.e. when I remember)

just done another 7 clips this year.
